Fuel

Just thinking of the tracks I could travel to this winter, Edenpark,stotfold.....and then have you seen the price of deisel at the min!!!!:o:o It would be cheeper to build an astro track in my garden!

LEGEND 02-10-2007 06:39 PM

What you do is go down to Tesco and buy a couple of those big bottles of vegetable oil and fill about half your tank and just fill the rest with deisel. My dad does this on long trips as it save on buying petrol.:D

tc2k 02-10-2007 06:47 PM

Vegetable Oil, wtf.
Our dads just changed to that LPG in our big car. Costs a fair whack to get it changed but at 45pence a litre, if you use your car alot it will pay off eventually and then its savings lol.

Does he drive a chip van ?

ashleyb4 02-10-2007 06:56 PM

What you need is a caravan and to follow a lorry we followed a car transporter for a short while on the way back from holiday and we got something stupid miles to the gallon it was mad as it was towing us along. Cant rememeber what it was but it was funny getting better fuel consumpion pulling the caravan than when we dont pull it lol but it got a bit tedious doing 55 mph so we overtook him it soon shot down again.

U MEAN U LOT DONT KNOW THAT A DIESEL CAR WILL RUN ON SUNFLOUR OIL JUST AS GOOD AS DIESEL , DONT YOU GUYS WATCH MYTHBUSTERS

ashleyb4 03-10-2007 07:45 AM

I knew it thats my mcdonalds started to use someof there old oil to run there vans. It was cleaned first of course.

Although the fuel price has gone up recently, I think it will only add a few quid to the price of filling up.
When I used to get the money off vouchers from supermarkets, I was really surprised by how little it reduced my bill at the pumps when I filled up and that was from virtually empty.

My car normally takes around £62 worth of diesel and that is brimming it. I do around 33k miles a year so I am also very aware of the cost of fuel. Sign up to the petrolprices website and they will e-mail with the cheapest petrol stations in your area.

DCM 03-10-2007 09:04 AM

If you do, don't brag, cause once you use vegetable oil, you are suppose to declare it as a fuel, lol. You could always getting a drum of oil from your local chippy (they have to pay to dispose of it), you have to seive the oil, and I think you add a drop of white spirits to thin it a little and you are done.... although your exhaust will smell of chips... or you could get oil from an indian restaurant and have it smell of curry.... mmmmm

I am on LPG, and at 41p a litre.... well, tis great.

telboy 03-10-2007 09:15 AM

Id go LPG, but theres only one garage I know of that does it, and thats about 15-20 mile away .

If more garages did it as an option, I think more people would use it.

But then the govornment wouldnt get as much in taxes, so they probably discourage garages from stocking it.

DCM 03-10-2007 09:23 AM

it is H+S that stops garages, try Shell, they are the cheapest place as a forecourt that sells it, plus most places that refill gas bottles do it too, just ask a taxi driver where he gets his from lol.

racingdwarf 03-10-2007 09:35 AM

I'm not to sure what the chip oil thing would do to my warranty:wtf:,As the fitter at Nissan removes the fuel filter I would hear WTF!!!!:D

bigred5765 03-10-2007 10:02 AM

lol
it does work, i haven't tried it but watched mythbusters run a merc on it, it was filtered first but gave the same mpg as diesel, they added nothing at all, just pure used vegetable oil. but I'm sure i heard they add the smallest amount of something in the UK, yes your supposed to declare it so you can be charged vat but who in there right mind would,

trekkerkk 03-10-2007 11:00 AM

hi racingdwarf.
does this mean we are going to see you down at the winter warmer meeting at eden park sunday,
trekkker

Hog 03-10-2007 11:12 AM

If it's new oil then you are supposed to declare it if you do more than 40 litres a week. If it's reclaimed oil then there is no need because the tax will have been paid on the orginal purchase for its intended use.

I believe you are supposed to thin it a little with paraffin. Also in cold weather you will need to use a pre-heater to thin it up as it will be too thick. Of course there is no need for that if you are using a mix with diesel.

I am sure there is still some duty to be paid on it if it is used as fuel. Not sure how they would know though.

Wonder if the price of vegtable oil will start to rise as people do this more and more. It could make fish and chips a bit expensive!!

craigosh 03-10-2007 01:15 PM

Goverment has recently said that you can produce upto 2,500 litres of bio diesel tax free. Think i worked it out and for me (if i had a diesel car lol) it'd be enough fuel for the year :D

i've been looking at these things http://www.etruk.com/

Gonna have a serious look next year at changing the car for nice diesel one and getting one of these bad boys. We got a chippy at the end of out road :D

think i'd still run a mix of bio and normal diesel. heard from some people about cars catching fire on just biodiesel

Col 03-10-2007 03:57 PM

If your car is on a 51 plate or newer, think long and hard about this: modern diesels produce so much power and eficiency because the engines run at incredibly fine tollerances. I know of an AA man who has recovered several modern diesel cars with fuel pumps knackered due to running on bio fuel.
Obviously this is a top end quote, but when I worked at BMW, a repair bill of £7000 was around average for a replacement fuel system...

Jonny69 03-10-2007 04:59 PM

Be very careful doing this as modern injection systems sometimes struggle as the lubrication properties of the oil are different to diesel. My understanding is that doing it yourself is no good. You need to buy the proper stuff that has been refined correctly. Someone my dad knows had a go at this and 3 of his businesses fairly new BWM's were knackered by it. You can not just sieve it as many people seen to think. There is a lot of hassle involved in doing it properly (Which is my opinion is the only way) and it is expensive to tool up to do it correctly.

Most manufacturers allow a 5% blend of bio-diesel. The warranty is still valid if you do this. You can buy this or add your own blend.

I'm thinking about it,if not this time it will be soon.Been a long long time!!
can't wait. Last time I was at EPO mr ADH was driving a yellow 2CV that I think ran on potato peelings:D:D.

matdodd 03-10-2007 07:50 PM

On most new high pressure diesels its a bad idea to run bio diesel at all. its very difficult to prove the blend of bio you have used and the quality seams to differ greatly. from my experiance with Hdi engines you can be left with a bill of £1000-2000. :o O and its about this time of year when cars start geting towed in because they wont start due to the fuel turning to a semi solid in the tank! :)

Chrislong 03-10-2007 09:20 PM

The cost of fuel stinks. the cost of road tax & insurance stinks too.

We pick our cars and pay our bills. I have chosen to drive a car which I expect to cost me lots in fuel, tax and insurance, but I love the car. OK, I do moan about the escalating costs as it is wrong, and my large carbon footprint is not bothering me. But if I was ever in a position where I had to reduce my cost of living (e.g. loose my job, become a dad, bought a house etc), then id be buying a diesel of some sort, perhaps a Golf TDI50. if it bothered me more, a none-turbo small hatch diesel.

But I wouldn't be attempting to run it on cheaper fuel, personally. The cost of a repair bill, and the cost/hassle of me not getting to somewhere and hiring a car would then outweigh the reason for me downgrading if I ever was to do so.

Also, recently in the area of where I work (Radcliffe, very near to where Woody lives), they were pulling cars over and then escorting them to an area nearby, where they dipped tanks and thoroughly checked cars, filters etc. There were several car transporters there and several left/confiscated cars.... id image red-diesel being the first thing they'll check for..

b4rs 04-10-2007 08:44 PM

or you could illegally run your deisels on red deisel? :eh?:

racingdwarf 04-10-2007 08:52 PM

Oh Yer, should have thought of that.problem solved.......just keep it to yourself eh

b4rs 04-10-2007 08:55 PM

what? dont even know wot your talking about?

man after my own heart :)

my cars got a 90 litre tank & with super over £1.05 at the mo its a bit of kick in the bollocks every time i fill up! worst thing is i know i'll be back there in about 300 miles :o

i like having a big car with a big engine fully loaded with all the toys etc but its starting to get ridiculous now! it certainly puts a few quid onto the cost of every meeting

PaulRotheram 04-10-2007 09:47 PM

Things seemed to have dropped back to 'normal' (normal at around 92pence.. however normal that can be justified) here at the smaller garages. It is abit of a joke now, running my car takes up quite a big portion of my wage due to inflated costs on everything. Also insurance isnt my friend at over 2k for this year on a 1.6 escort.. sigh.

:(

Chrislong 05-10-2007 09:24 AM

Wow Rothers, your being buggered by a large fist on that one.. :o

Ive been lucky with fuel in that case, as I was due to fill up on Sunday and didn't know about the 2p per litre rise. Ive actually managed to get to work and back on the dregs and fuel light should be on soon, so Ive not actually lost out like I thought I might have.

2p per litre on 50 litres = £1 = about 45% of 1 pint of Carling. I'll be drinking plenty tonight.

How much for insurance??????
Wow this makes me glad to be old!!! haha
Mine is £700, for any driver and its a commercial policy......

showtime 05-10-2007 08:05 PM

£402 fully comp on my group 20 :D

i suppose once you factor in the £1500 saving on insurance over a younger driver on their boyed up saxo the 17mpg i get doesn't seem so bad after all :)

Lee 05-10-2007 08:25 PM

I paid £1.04 a litre today i was not a happy chappy. Especially as i do a 700 mile a week before i even think of going racing.

We are really being shafted with oil prices, the uk is the cheapest place in the world to refine fuel, but with the massive tax added it makes it just about the most expensive to buy it.

There is actually another 200+ years worth of oil in the north sea but companies like shell and bp pulled out as it is cheaper and easier to get it from russia/ azerbaijan. But shell are having a lot of problems right now with the russians and may be kicked out of russia as the government are trying to claim the oil is theirs.

I think if the MP`s sacrificed their second homes in london which we pay for and make people who can work do so then we could actually be paying less tax, live in a nicer country and be better off.

imagine that:wtf:

GRIFF55 05-10-2007 08:52 PM

What group 20 you got and who insures it for that, you lucky man:D

How can your mum cal my beauty an rac truck!!

ashleyb4 05-10-2007 09:19 PM

racingdwarf 05-10-2007 10:02 PM

Wow!! Azbr.....Azerbjian..........Azerbijan.........nop still can't spell it,Hat's of you must play a mean game of scrabble!!:p

I was talking to a chap that owns a local petrol station and what realy pissed me was the tax went up 2p the petrol companys (shell was the worst) seem to have bunged a few pence more on for the hell of it.In my local station it went up nearly 6p over night!....gits

I insure our landrover discovery es & my 56 plate nissan navara fully comp for about £650 I,m loving company insurance as I'm 32 I'd normaly get hit....HARD.

tc2k 05-10-2007 10:06 PM

63.7pence of the fuel is tax. So I really dont think this is the oil companies trying to bleed us dry when there making less than 1/3 that the government does on fuel at best
