rb5

hiya all am looking at having a go with an rb5 over the winter. what hopups are advised weather for adisional strenth or for handling

jim76 25-09-2008 08:58 AM

just sold mine mate or you could have tried it!

hop ups, there are a few threads with these. The car is strong out of the box, nothing needed for strength. Only essential mod is 30g of lead in the front end. Maybe replace the diff balls with associated or the ceramic from atomic carbon.
Use Losi springs if you have a set available as the kyosho ones are a little bizarre in range.
The atomic towers are nice and give more holes, but i broke rear and the tiny front mount! Kit items are strong and i didn't notice any real difference from using the extra holes. Obviously someone of your level may notice more!

A handy tip for the rear inner pivot ball is fit one with a hex driver head, as it is impossible to get to with a box wrench for standard ballstud. Makes changing the link easier.
Think that it pretty much it, as i said have a read in the kyosho section as i've probably missed something. There is various discussion in there about the rear wishbones, using the lazer ones which are narrower etc.

hope you like it, it's a solid car. Better than my old B4.

ps, i have some titanium turnbuckles if you want to shave some weight of it, they are a bit porky on the scales!

It would be good to see you have a run with one

The only essential bits to improve handling are to place weight in the front end, around 35-40g, carbide balls when the kit ones wear and the AC rear tower. (although this would depend on if your trying one with the old or new rear end)

Other bits I have on mine are the front AC tower, alloy hinge pin carriers and hexs, although I wouldn't class these parts as essential, but a nice touch. :)

niggs98 25-09-2008 09:07 AM

have the option of a new rear end as well so will be trying both. has anyone tried the new rear end. ifso what did u find. will be getting the alloy bits once i know if i like the car. i take it that the extra weight is to get the front end in

jim76 25-09-2008 09:18 AM

yeah weight at the front helps turn in. I also ran a front wing. Never ran without it actually, so not sure if it made much difference!

didn't try the new rear, i ran mine with lazer wishbones instead.

RSharpy 25-09-2008 09:20 AM

I have only ever ran the car with the standard rear end, the car as gone that well this season I haven't been in a rush to change it although the rear new rear end is something I really need to get around to trying. But having seen one built up on a car my only concern is that you lose the option of standing the shocks up straight, which can be needed at times on British tracks, ideally we need Mr AC to make a rear tower for the new rear end.

The car is very light on the front so the weight helps the car both turn in and jump flatter.

niggs98 25-09-2008 09:46 AM

ok will get the new rear end to play with and see what it does

Big E 25-09-2008 10:15 AM

What about putting the motor in the middle :woot::thumbsup:

You are mad Nathan!!

niggs98 25-09-2008 10:21 AM

mart 25-09-2008 10:26 AM

Lee 25-09-2008 10:36 AM

pmsl as i said its a winter play thing and if i like it then who knows :wtf:

gps3300 25-09-2008 11:36 AM

Nath, you'll need the proline rear axle conversion for Losi/Asso wheels unless you've still got lots of glued up ZX-5 ones hanging around.

The new rear end kit consists of the wider rear arms, A lower shock tower, shorter shock bodies, new cvd shafts due to the longer length wishbones and different rear hubs.

I'd try to get a full kit Nathan.

can get a full conversion to as well without issue to the newer rear end so am gonna try it at least to see what it does ;)

Martin-Barbour 26-09-2008 10:20 AM

I'd probably fit the Associated FT turnbuckles if you get the chance, they're a direct fit.

I bent a lot of kit ones..... but I crash a lot........ so maybe it's just me......

niggs98 26-09-2008 10:49 AM

cool thanks for all the help all. will see how i go

Hi Nathan, if you get an RB5 for the next round and I pop in or race, come over and let's have a chat.

The car felt very good, and more to come for sure if I do another round, but I really will be trying to help others, so I don't have too.

You should see a few more next round.

Take it easy mate

Hi Karl
Had it for over a week now and finally got a chance to have a play today on a greasy epr. Used sharpys shock setup and guessed at the rest as had the newer rear end on it so went without any weight in the front. Car felt very safe and easy to drive with more than enough steering at all points through the corner even on a very changing track the car felt consistent. shocks were really good as the car felt supple yet had more than enough pack to soak up even the biggest of jumps onto flat. ran it with lipo as well which was interesting as had fun keeping the front end down on the straight even with a loose slipper i could still wheely 2/3rds the way down it without an issue (although i didnt add any additional weight to counteract the lipo), will post a setup over the next few weeks once i have one ;)

am also hoping to run it at worksop as well if i get in for next week

caneye 12-10-2008 12:17 AM

20~30g weight in the front makes a world of difference .. try it! :D

niggs98 03-11-2008 08:06 AM

hiya all, had my first race meeting with the ultima a couple of weeks back at rnd 2 of worksop, had nimhs in it as my lipo was in the pred and i was doing both classes, i put 10g on top of the servo to reduce the wheelying to a managable amount and after talking to a very helpful woody went up 5 wt in shock oil on the front (a change i wanted to make after putting a pack through the car after kiddy) then left the car alone as it felt so good, 4th in the first round numptied it in 2 and 3 then a 8th in the 4th to put me 9th in the A first time out, a loose sensor wire put me out of the final but as they say thats racing, thorughly enjoyed the day especialy with how the ultima felt so nice to drive. really safe but with more than enough steering and mid corner pivot that seemed just right to me.

want more time with the car as feel it can stil be improved even though it feels so good at the mo. give me a few weeks and i will post where i am with setup

footey 03-11-2008 08:20 AM

nathen dint no u was giving the rb5 a go

RogerM 03-11-2008 08:39 AM

Nathan, glad to hear your like the RB5. PM me your indoor set-up and an e-mail addy and I'll send you mine .... maybe we can learn something from each other.

Might be able to find the time type it all into oople but the only time I get in front of a screen is at work and can't really spend that amount of time on it here!!!

Hi All,

Good to see you have had the same initial feeling with the car. The more and more guys I chat too are very happy with the RB5, and I think in the past it has just been a matter of a few running the car to show and gain the confidence.

Many thanks for the oople support and posative help and feedback to the others, and let's hope it continues to grow.

Regards
Karl Marsden

RogerM 03-11-2008 10:05 PM

Just noticed Nathan posted the same set-up here

http://www.oople.com/forums/showthre...?t=3511&page=2

and I responded with my thoughts in post #34.

I was the only person running the car at the nationals in 08, which was a shame as the car has real potential. I was never going to be able to show that, 5 years off racing 2wd (at least) and 3 years racing 1/8th rallycross did nothing to aid my 'light touch' on the sticks (probably never had one to begin with .... lol) along with struggling with brushless set-ups and loads of other issues meaning I only picked up the sticks for nationals and 4wd regionals.

Great to see support for the car and I think that Woody and Niggs should see it right up there in 09, hopefully with plenty of other too!!

RB5, the only way to go IHMO

super__dan 03-11-2008 10:14 PM

Rog, it's great to have you back on oOple! Where have you been?

RogerM 04-11-2008 07:29 AM

Thanks for the warm welcome Dan. Glad to be back.

To be honest I've been totally focused on work for the last couple of months, running a very difficult but important project and had to put a lot of hours in. Not raced in any shap or form since the last national till 2 weekends ago!

Sure we'll have some of our normal "debates" over the coming months :D

mes 14-12-2008 08:42 PM

Are there any news on a complete kit with an upgraded rear end and some proper turnbuckles? I still have the kit turnbuckles on my SP, but I really hate them. I still wonder wether to get an FS or not, but I still do not have a 2wd buggy or stadium truck...

Dhami1 02-01-2009 02:01 PM

Hi Guys.. New to this Forum and 1/10. (Great Forum btw)

Ive got myself a nice new RB5..

Been racing 8th for a few years.. but looking to do some 10th indoor for the winter to save myself from the cold.lol. what tyres would you reccommend?

Thanks
Gurdeep

RogerM 02-01-2009 05:18 PM

Hi Gurdeep, long time no see!!!

where are you going to be racing?

Schumacher yellow minipins all round are the #1 choice for carpet

Some people prefer the yellow minispike as it's a lot more forgiving but not as fast.

Some clubs use totally different control tires!

I can give you a killer indoor set-up for places like Dudley. If I remember your driving from the 1/8th days you like a bit of steering so my set-ups will work well for you mate.

You will be needed a few spare sets of springs though.

Kit silvers will be ok for the rear (although I prefer a slightly stiffer rear spring at Dudley as it's always mega grippy)
Front springs will be either Kyosho lime greens or Losi blacks (with 1.5 coils cut off)
