give marshal's a chance to...

one thing i have noticed, and have been guilty of it myself, but don't do it now.don't touch your control's when a marshal is putting your car back on track.not nice if your the marshal;)let him/her get there hand's clear first:)just think its worth pointing out.

Garry Driffill 26-05-2008 05:15 PM

I had some eager beaver do this to me and hurt my thumb a year or so ago indoor at york. It bloody hurt !

mole2k 26-05-2008 05:22 PM

Thats one thing that really annoys me when marshaling. If I make a mistake I dont touch the controls untill the car has been set down and the marshal is clear. It's just really ignorant to keep the throttle planted while on your lid...

ashleyb4 26-05-2008 05:29 PM

I think it sok to rev your motor if your stuck upsidedown and trying to get the marshall attension if there looking the other way but as soon as the marshall runs towards it you should be on full brake until they have put you down.

ben 26-05-2008 05:30 PM

I saw someone do this to greg williams yesterday

James 26-05-2008 05:34 PM

I think generally the quality of marshalling is BAD, its something thats struck me since i've started racing again..

A lot of folks just seem to sit there thinking about the previous race they've just had rather than where they are now and being alert and ready to correct a car as soon as possible, a number of drivers rev the car to get marshalls attention though..

If you want to see how to be a good marshall watch Andy Fraser, he's the master.. I do try hard myself though..

Everyone should try harder and be more alert to what's hapening and where a car is likely to crash and be ready.

We should give trophies/rewards or something for good marshalling..tricky one to penalise bad marshalling unless its blatent.

ashleyb4 26-05-2008 05:36 PM

James you should try micro thats worse. Craig harris is really good at marshalling He is like a coilled spring ready to pounce.:p:p:p

This is plenty acceptable and how it should be done. If a car has any throttle on while I marshal, I make myself heard by pretty much YELLING, "LAY OFF THE THROTTLE!"

ashleyb4 26-05-2008 05:37 PM

At regionals and club i wont marshall the car if there on the trottle but at naionals i just marshall it because i dont want to get in trouble.

ash if you rev your car mate it will only piss the marshall off it does me and also you stand a chance of blowing out them tires:lol:

Sabben 26-05-2008 05:48 PM

Hm... Actually I have never thought about this. Good tip, I must say!

I will doubtless have this in mind next time when I am marshalling, and driving of course! It is silly to yell at someone when you do the same stupid thing yourself!;)

Southwell 26-05-2008 05:48 PM

It's the people that rev it even when you've seen it that annoys me, then even when they brake the front wheels are still spinning. If they rev it when im just about to pick it up i wait until they stop, if they rev it when i have it in my hand ill have a word afterwards.

reg 26-05-2008 05:52 PM

when i raced nitro we reved it to get there attentionas you say then just put the brakes on,some times you have to blip the throttle to stop the engine stopping,if a car was reving the engine we would just leave it:mad:,if they reved it up before you put it down than next time they needed turning over just do it with your foot,

If they rev it in my hands, it gets dropped. No matter which position it's in, hopefuly at an angle likely to break it to teach them a lesson!

AndyM 26-05-2008 06:12 PM

I was suprised, but i had to marshal a car that did this in the A final at South Shields yesterday. I'm not going to name and shame him, but i thought the driver was above this sort of thing

For some reason i picked it up though

I think what Ashely said is acceptable though.

Chrislong 26-05-2008 06:19 PM

If someone is revving the car when you need to marshall it, then don't touch it..... it could be the worlds championships, don't touch it guys, it'll burn for weeks and probably scar!!

At Oswestry, Chis Bowater crashed just before the loop on the last lap where I was marshalling, I could see his adrenalin was at peak and I was as quick as could be, but he applied full throttle a fraction too soon and a tyre caught my wrist slightly, only very slightly, and im sure Boggy didn't mean it as I know he's not like that, so I said nothing, but it left a slight mark which stung like a small burn.... it just shows how much the spinning tyres can hurt if the tyre is in full contact with skin.

I get very frustrated when I crash, and I used to apply throttle in frustration at myself. I now wiggle my steering instead. Although to get somebodies attention I may give the throttle a blast but get on the brakes once seen.

Chris

No there should not be awards for good marshalling, just penalties for lack of care when marshalling although how is that judged? it can't be. The top and bottom of it is, we shouldn't crash (but we do). Andy Fraser is very alert, and his speed is exagerated by the length of his limbs!

As long as we all marshall as we'd like to be marshalled, then it'll be better. There are many who shout and are impatient, sometimes while the car is still rolling! yet as a marshall, puts no effort in and doesn't like to be shouted at for it.

Chris

i saw a car lobbed in a bush for this hilarious the driver was furious

CharlieF 26-05-2008 06:37 PM

I am pleased to say I saw some good marshalling at Oswestry in the form of Andy Carter who has just returned to the scene. He clearly has not lost any of his driving skill as his "B" final demonstrates but he happened to be marshalling in front of me during a race I was watching and he was alert and ready to pounce on any car in difficulty every time they came past his spot.
I did think at the time - how good would this sport be if all marshals were like that!

ashleyb4 26-05-2008 06:38 PM

your girl chris it doesnt hurt that much :p

A

Chrislong 26-05-2008 06:48 PM

Oh, well if you want to test my pain fresh-hold against yours, then game-on!

Mrs oOple 26-05-2008 06:48 PM

I had a scar on my hand for ages where Jimmys car burned me at Tiverton a few years ago, as I was about to put his car down for the final it suffered interference, and the rear tyre tore into my hand. It was painful for quite a while! Yuk, dirty tyre burn.

_JP_ 26-05-2008 06:49 PM

ha you girls should try marshaling the 8th :)

to be fair if no one is looking I would rev to get attention, but always break ASAP as to not harm anyone.

In the 8th I will not pick a car up thats revving I just stand there until they stop , and so do a lot of people if they want to come and see me after thats fine :woot:

Now then, is that just an incentive to yourself to be the best marshal?

James 26-05-2008 06:55 PM

Not that its right to rev while being marshalled but why dont you all just bring a pair of gloves ? Its what the majority do for rallycross ...

_JP_ 26-05-2008 07:06 PM

Yea like some sparco driving gloves, I got some big thick ones that I use, probably an overkill for 10th

rcracer 26-05-2008 07:12 PM

what next crash helmets so drivers dont have to worry about taking a marshall out over a jump

Actually, i'm with Chris on this one.

I have 2 scars on one of my fingers that was from a car tyre that was spinning when it got into contact with my finger.

i still have a scar on my hand from about 10years ago from schuey blues i think it should be a penalty offense for revving and abusing marshalls providing the marshall was seen to be aware and atempting to marshall

Go to the nook then. You have to stand in a steel cage to marshall the crossover. :woot:

telboy 26-05-2008 07:33 PM

I always marshal how I expect to be marshalled myself.
Unfortunately a lot of the ohter drivers don't seem to think in the same way.

I've had my thumb melted on spur gear by drivers reving cars up in the past, and also had some nice straight line tatoo's burnt into my arm by a tyre as someone throttled up when the tyres were touching my arm.

In the past (in TC's) I have just put the car back on the side of the track upside down when marshalling has ended up in me being injured by someone throttling up. Ok I got some flack from the driver after, but if he can be so ignorant as to do this then I can't be bothered to marshal them properly.

Im up for that one!!:)

There should be awards for best marshal during the day.

josh_smaxx 26-05-2008 07:52 PM

Im with most people here, drivers are to impatiant (i am as well, im terrible for it) but marshalls just dont seem to care, i dont pick up cars that are revving but when people are shouting at you when your moving towards there car is does get to you. At shields yesterday i was on point 1 for qualy (for people who wernt there, it was in the middle of a corner table top where the marshal had to be low so not to obstruct the apex of the orner behind them). Some one crashed behind me, the marshal that was closest wasnt paying attention so the driver complained at me for being sat down  Im not exactly fast due to my physical fittness but i try my hardest and have sustained slight injuries from just getting to cars just to make sure there back on the track (at shields i tripped on on of the track markings and caught my knee on the wodden peg holding it up and put a nice gash in it :().

But if anyone has any tips for me then im all ears aslong as they do the same for me, i could have won my final yesterday mainly if i didnt crash but if the marshal was paying attention then i woud have stood a better chance.

rant over lol

Whatever you like..

Gloves seem a perfectly sensible idea to me .. Not that i'm insulting peoples intelligence that it even needs to be suggested..

I have scars too, worst one is from foam tyres when we used to use tractite.. yowser, it took ages to heal .. if only i'd have been wearing gloves.

Lee 26-05-2008 07:54 PM

Ditto, if a car is on its roof and is on full throttle (through choice) then i just stand by it until the driver lifts off the throttle, this is one thing i have noticed in off road. I really dont know why people do it:confused:

 nop, after the race someone came up with a big hammer and started hitting it lol (the peg, not my knee before we get this even worse )

ben 26-05-2008 08:01 PM

I hope the peg hit the hammer back twice as hard :woot:
