If you've recently received your child's NWEA MAP Growth results and aren't sure what the numbers mean, you're not alone. NWEA MAP scores by grade level can provide a detailed picture of a student's current academic achievement and growth in subjects such as math, reading, language usage, and science. However, understanding RIT scores, percentile rankings, national averages, and growth results requires knowing how the MAP assessment works.

For the 2026–2027 school year, one of the most important things for parents to understand is the use of the updated 2025 NWEA MAP Growth norms. These norms provide the national comparison data used to interpret student performance by grade level, subject, and testing season.

What Are NWEA MAP Test Scores?

NWEA MAP Growth is a computer-adaptive assessment designed to measure what a student knows and is ready to learn next. Unlike a traditional test where every student receives the same questions, MAP Growth adjusts the difficulty of questions according to the student's answers.

A student's main MAP result is reported as a RIT score. RIT stands for Rasch Unit, and the scale is designed as an equal-interval measurement. This means that the difference between 180 and 190 represents roughly the same amount of achievement as the difference between 210 and 220.

However, a RIT score should not be interpreted by itself. To understand what a MAP result means, parents should consider:

  • Student's grade level
  • Subject tested
  • Fall, winter, or spring testing season
  • National grade-level norms
  • Percentile ranking
  • Previous MAP scores
  • Student growth over time

Looking at these factors together provides a much clearer picture than simply asking whether a particular RIT score is "good."

How Do MAP Percentile Rankings Work?

Percentile rankings are one of the easiest ways to compare a student's MAP performance with students nationally.

For example, if a student receives a 75th percentile ranking, that means the student's achievement score is as high as or higher than approximately 75% of students in the same comparison group.

A percentile is not the percentage of questions a student answered correctly. A student at the 75th percentile did not necessarily answer 75% of the questions correctly.

Percentile rankings are comparison measurements. They show where a student's achievement falls relative to the national norm group.

This distinction is especially important when parents compare MAP results with classroom grades or other standardized tests.

What Are the 2025 MAP Growth Norms?

The 2025 MAP Growth norms are the updated national reference points used to put MAP scores into context. They replace the older 2020 norms for current interpretation.

The norms are important because student achievement changes over time. National comparison data needs to be periodically refreshed so that a student's score can be compared with a more current group of students.

For the 2026–2027 school year, parents may therefore encounter MAP percentile rankings that differ from older charts published using the 2020 norms.

The RIT scale itself has not been replaced. Instead, the reference data used to interpret where a RIT score falls compared with other students has been updated.

Why Can the Same RIT Score Have a Different Percentile?

This is one of the most confusing parts of the updated norms.

Suppose an older MAP chart shows a particular RIT score at one percentile, while a newer chart places that same score at a somewhat different percentile. This does not mean that the student's actual RIT achievement changed.

The difference comes from the normative comparison group.

Think of it this way: the student's RIT score is the measurement, while the percentile tells you how that measurement compares with the norm group. When the norm group is updated, the percentile associated with a particular RIT score can change.

That's why parents should be careful when using old MAP score charts found online.

MAP Scores by Subject for 2026–2027

MAP Growth assessments can cover several academic areas, and each subject has its own score distributions and grade-level expectations.

NWEA MAP Math Scores

MAP Growth Math measures mathematical skills across grade levels, including areas such as operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, data, and problem solving.

A math RIT score should be compared with the appropriate grade level and testing season. A fall score, for example, should not automatically be compared with a spring score from a different grade without considering the testing context.

NWEA MAP Reading Scores

MAP Reading evaluates reading-related skills and helps schools identify areas where students are performing and where additional instruction may be useful.

Reading scores can be interpreted using the student's RIT score, percentile ranking, grade level, and growth between testing periods.

NWEA MAP Language Scores

MAP Growth Language assessments provide information about skills such as grammar, punctuation, usage, and writing conventions.

As with other MAP subjects, the most useful interpretation comes from comparing the student's result with the appropriate national norms rather than relying on one universal "good score."

NWEA MAP Science Scores

MAP Growth Science measures science achievement across relevant grade levels. Because science expectations vary substantially by grade, the student's grade and testing season are important when interpreting the RIT result.

Fall, Winter, and Spring MAP Scores

MAP Growth is commonly administered during different parts of the school year. The three major testing periods are:

  • Fall: Provides a starting point for the school year.
  • Winter: Shows progress during the academic year.
  • Spring: Provides an end-of-year achievement and growth snapshot.

A student's score may naturally increase between fall and spring as they learn more. Therefore, parents should not judge performance based solely on one testing period.

For example, a student who begins the year at a lower percentile but demonstrates substantial growth may be making very positive academic progress.

Achievement Percentile vs. Growth Percentile

Another important distinction is the difference between achievement percentile and growth percentile.

Achievement percentile describes how a student's current achievement compares with other students in the relevant norm group.

Growth percentile, on the other hand, focuses on how much progress a student made compared with students who had a similar starting point.

This means a student can have a relatively average achievement percentile while showing exceptionally strong growth. Another student may have a very high achievement percentile but show more typical growth.

Both measurements provide useful information.

How Parents Should Read a 2026–2027 MAP Report

When looking at a MAP Growth report, avoid focusing on just one number. Instead, ask several questions:

  1. What is the student's current RIT score?
  2. What grade and subject does the score represent?
  3. Was the test taken in fall, winter, or spring?
  4. What is the student's achievement percentile?
  5. How much has the student grown since the previous test?
  6. How does the result compare with the current national norms?
  7. Is the student's growth consistent with their instructional goals?

This approach provides a much more meaningful interpretation than searching for a single "good MAP score."

Why Updated MAP Score Charts Matter in 2026–2027

One of the biggest mistakes parents can make is relying on an outdated MAP score chart without checking which norms it uses.

A chart based on older norms may produce a different percentile ranking than a chart based on the current 2025 norms. For this reason, families reviewing NWEA MAP scores in 2026–2027 should make sure their comparison information matches the current normative data.

A RIT score is most useful when it is placed into the correct context: subject, grade, season, percentile, and growth.

Final Thoughts

NWEA MAP Test Scores are much more than a single number on a school report. The RIT score provides a measurement of achievement, while percentile rankings help parents understand how that achievement compares with national peers. Growth results then add another important dimension by showing how much the student has progressed over time.

For the 2026–2027 school year, the updated 2025 MAP Growth norms are especially important because they provide the current national reference point for interpreting MAP results.

Instead of asking only, "Is this MAP score good?" a better question is: "What does this score tell me about my child's current achievement and growth compared with students in the same grade and season?"

That broader perspective can make MAP Growth reports much easier to understand and much more useful for supporting a student's academic progress.
