Default ZX-5 One Way

Is there a one-way setup available for the KMC converted ZX-5? I'm lead to believe that you can't use the original kit version with the 2 piece propshaft. Is that correct?

No I guess you can't thinking of it, you can use the one way diff but if you want a centre one way I'm not sure it's possible?

One way front diff would do for starters - I better find the instructions and the bits I got with the car and build a front diff!

I'm racing on polished wood and while the permanent 4WD gives awesome braking I seem to be losing out on front end bite compared to those running a one way.

If I could find a way to keep the bite with permanent 4WD I'd be sorted.

Nah I'm running an original ZX-5 with KMC conversion Roger.

What are the differences between my kit and the SP?

The main differences are the whole front and rear suspension geometry has been revised.

If your missing a little bit of front end it will be just the ticket. Upgrade kit is LAW35.

If you missing a lot of front end I suspect the KMC conversion's weight distribution isn't suiting you, this is the problem I have with the BJ4WE stylee layouts and why I know run a ZX5-SP not a "4" car.

With the ZX5-SP on carpet, perm' 4wd you might find the following a good starting point

Kit set-up except

Front,

longest link, 2mm under inside ball stud
just a fraction of tow out (about .5 degree total so .025 per side)
7 deg castor blocks
knuckle mounted in low position (place 2mm trapped washer between lower pivot rather than between upper pivots)
Yellow springs 35wt oil

Rear,

Longest link, no washers under inside .... 2mm under outside
2.5deg rear toe in (A25 block)
3 spacer under front pivot block (1 or 2 spacer if there is lots of polished floor though)
Silver springs
30wt oil
Med wheelbase

Cells forward.

If car feels a bit twitchy then up 5wt all round.

I have not run an original ZX5 on carpet so can not help ..... but once you've driven the SP version you won't look back!!!

Thanks for the set Roger but as I stated earlier I race on polished wood - a large village hall to be precise.

I will take a look at the LAW35 kit as well as possibly running a one way diff - one thing at a time though.

you can fit a layshaft one way to a kmc, you just need either this,

i have used both the universal version is more efficient so the cheaper dog bone version is sitting in my spares box

i would recommend not running the full one way diff this makes the kmc version near impossible to drive it turns up its own arse and is not nice to drive try the layshaft

I was looking at this before I sold my kmc chassis.

If you used a stock input shaft for the front diff, you could then .. maybe find a dogbone nearly the length to go between the kmc layshaft yoke and the yok on the front shaft oneway setup. I know there used to be a few guys making custom cf driveshafts. You could maybe just have one made if you really wanted to go this route.

they are quite cheap.

i have run my zx5 with front one way and it works very well. its all about a balanced setup

Sorry Hog, missed that ..... in which case I'd go down 1 spring all round (yellows #65)

I personally am not a fan of one-way-diffs ... to the point of having not even tried it in the ZX5 yet!

So what's the different effects of running a 1 way front diff compared to a 1 way layshaft? Would the effects be "that " noticable on a polished wood surface?

I think my setup is quite balanced I'm just lacking a little sparkle from the front under power-on steering.

It's just a shame that it seems to get the steering I want I'm going to lose the braking advantage of permanent 4WD.

And Brett - yes - avoiding the door frame flat out improves the handling no end . Dunno about you but my car is so much better with 4 wheels attached rather than 3.
