Default What's the design theory behind making the 22 so long??

After running my 22 for the first time at Worksop on Sunday, one thing is really obvious on track and that is the cars length.

I ended up making the wheelbase the shortest it would go on the wheel side of the wishbone which made the car feel better. Next time out I'll be trying moving the wishbone further forward on the inner hingepin to see if it makes it better still.

Given the car felt better with the shorter wheelbase (in my opinion), why was the car made so long? Is it more suited to outdoor conditions?

The only thing I've read about the design and the reason for the length of the car is for stability and corner speed! I can't remember where I saw it but they said the longer they kept making the car the more corner speed they could carry... On a normal buggy I think having it so long would make it feel very safe and understeery but apparently the new steering geometry of the 22 means that you still have plenty of front end to deal with the slower tight corners!

Interesting to hear that u felt it went better when u shortened it... Are u running rear or mid motor set up... And what track surface are u running on???

Jon!

This was mid motor config on a corky indoor surface with some carpet. Now the indoor season is over I'll test the different wheelbase settings to see how it affects the car.

Have you tried running the shorter wheelbase?

I've done about 60 practice laps so far as I refine my set-up.

How long it seems doesn't bother me, what I do know is that it monsters fast corners, changes direction very quickly but also very easily and without an edge, jumps very well, rides well and so on. Is nearly a second faster than my B4 already, and that had a years worth of set-up.

I suggest you work with the set-up first before playing with the wheelbase, you're messing with one of the very fundamental philosphies of the car.

the extra length makes the car really stable and handle bumps really well!!
jumping is also improved

ive just been testing at batley outdoors and the difference is staggering

bumps........what bumps!!
the banked corner 90% throttle, any line and the car just holds its course

try that at 60% with any other car and your up a creak unless you get the line just right!!

however the rear w/base adjustment is not really going to change any of this!!
all it is there for is to change the amount of weight over the rear wheels for grip!!!(ie creating more weight behind the axle) when a car is this long it will have very little bearing on anything else!

I run rear motor in mine, the place it was far better than my B4 on our track was the dirt section, it loved it, now I think that may have a bit to do with the length, I should think on US dirt tracks it's fantastic
