Default Should smoke be coming from my ESC

so for the first time since getting my new old toy - an rc10 b3- i fired her up. in doing so i noticed that the little mtroniks sonik 3 eco 27 esc started billowing smoke, became very hot and the motor was spinning madly. i tried this a few times but with the same result. the battery is a 7.4v 2s 4000mah 40c bionic hardcase lipo. im pretty sure the input voltage of the esc can handle the battery so im at a loss as to what the issue could be

any thoughts?

no it most definitely shouldn't!
Are all the connections the right way round?
If they are I'm just wondering what motor you have fitted as the esc can only handle a 27 turn.
Not good

that happend to an lrp esc i had had been using it with a 7.2v nimh battery then connected a lipo and puff loads of smoke with motor spinning think there not compatible with the voltage of a lipo bud so be naffed now will need to get a new esc

Pete the motor is a 19T Trinity brushed - that might explain something. Strangely though the previous owner was running the same set up only with a different battery presumably a nimh

this is what i first thought but the voltage of the lipo and the nimh would have been roughly the same, my lipo is 7.4 and the nimh would be 7.2...

Had smoking esc's when I have put a the diode across the motor the wrong way round, part of the learning curve.
Have a word with mtronics regarding the lipo (and the esc), http://www.mtroniks.net/

Batteries off the charger can have higher volts

(any good model shop will sell cans of smoke to put back into the esc, just ask)

LiPo batteries come off the charger at 8.4 volts, not 7.4, that might have something to do with it.

NIMHs also come off the charger as high as 8.4v, if not more.
Difference is they drop much faster.

Simple, your ESC is fried, battery choice isn't an issue, chances are it is the motor overloading the eco27/

i think thats it... no matter how you spin it a 19t motor is not a great partner for a 27t max esc!

You just got to decide now to either buy a new brushed speedo or go with a brushless combo.
