Default Computer problems can anyone help?

Last night the power went off while I was working on my computer, went to switch it on this morning and not a lot happens. I get the normal load up screen then it asks me if i want to restore / load it up in safe mode, normal mode or a couple of other safe modes to do with networks.

I have tried all the options available and all my pc does is restart it self and asks the same questions all over again!!!

Does anyone have any ideas about how I may be able to get my pc going again?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like Windows has got corrupted in the power cut. Depends what sort of windows cd you have, if you have a standard one try and boot off it and try the repair function, that may fix it. If you have one of the restore ones they send out nowadays you will lose your data.

It's probably the usual 'unmountable boot volume' problem, in which case is repair install wont work as setup won't see the current windows install because the boot sector's stuffed.

Keep hammering F8 as the machine is starting,
You will get the windows boot menu, it should be the same as the one you've been getting but there will be another option; something like 'Disable automatic restart on system failure',
Select that and wait for the blue screen,
Does it say 'unmountable boot volume' anywhere?

Thanks, most of the data is backed up on a seperate hard drive, so hopefully I will only end up losing what I was working on during the day.

Not sure about the unmountable boot volume. I did read somewhere about pressing the F8 key and there is an option to select "last known good" not sure about the others, though i will have a look this evening when i get in.

You shouldn't lose anything if it's this problem, it's a 2 minute fix

1 - Boot from the XP CD.
2 - At the first screen it will ask you if you want to install a fresh copy of windows or goto the recovery console, press'r' to goto the recovery console.
3 - Type 'chkdsk /p' and press enter.
4 - After it's finished type 'fixboot' and press enter.
5 - Answer yes to the next question.
6 - When it's finished type 'exit' and press enter.

The machine will reboot, problem solved

Yep if he's got a proper xp cd, a lot of the manufactuers now send out a restore cd with just an image on instead.

Have tried everything that has been suggested without any luck. Think it's going to be an insurance to get a new one sorted out as no one thats looked at it seems to really know why it's not working.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The price of new pcs today, you may aswell just buy a newer, faster, and cooler one. But remember, as soon as you plug it in its out of date
