Default sx gearing

not sure where to start with gearing or even some basic rules would help, just that i recently ran my cat on a high grip carpet surface and was uncomfortable with the temp of both the motor and speed control, the car is as it came but with 82 spur and 24 pinion, it runs a 6.5t brushless, any help appreciated

I run 83T spur 21 on a 5.5 indoors.

22 and it overheats after about 4.5 minutes.

6.5 i rarely go above a 23 on a large track so if it is a small tight and twisty on with a short straight i would gear down accordingly. start with a 22 like carl says and gear up or down from there. also make sure your air vents are open to maximise airflow across the motor and that you are using a fan on your speedo
