Looking for a new TV

Hello all!

I'm looking to buy a new TV.

I know very little about the following:

Plasma
LCD
LED
1080P
100hz

Someone at work has mentioned that I should be looking for an LCD or LED 1080P tv, 100hz.

I currently watch movies, and play PS3. what is more desirable, 1080P, or 100hz?

I am looking for a 37" or 40", price, around £500 ish? maybe more.

If anybody would like to assist me with making a decision, please feel free!

What you really want is 1080P, which is the highest resolution TVs can offer with HD. LED is a bit pricy at the moment, LCD seems the way to go. I've got 2 LCD TVs, and 3 monitors, from Sony and Samsung, and there haven't been any problems yet!

one of these, which is a little different. I know it's 'only' a 32-inch, but you get a better TV for the money, barring the size. Also, 32-inch is hardly small. Unless you're sitting miles away from it 32" is all you need in my opinion. It has the 100Hz refresh rate, and is 1080p, has a better contrast ratio etc than the other TVs I linked to. Has built in FreeSat HD and 3 HDMI ports.

Best piece of advice: buy a 'brand name'. Someone like:
-Sony
-Samsung
-LG

We have that LG without freesat, can't fault it, and next door have a Panasonic with freesat, stick a dish up and free HD, can't fault that idea

We have just recently bought a Samsung LED TV, expensive yes (the bracket to hang it on the unit was £200 lol) but sooooooo worth it! The picture quality difference is worth every penny. Not often I say that about things like TVs....If you can cope with the extra cost I wouldn't recommend anything but LED now after seeing the difference. Especially for movies and PS3 you notice things you didn't see before.

Why buy something which isn't as good to want to buy the better one at a later date? Costs more in the long run.

You know the only difference with an 'LED' TV is it using LED's for a backlight instead of fluorescent's? All that will give you is potentially 'whiter' white and lower power use, any extra 'detail' is down to the LCD panel itself not the backlight. It should last longer than floursecent's too and won't lose brightness over time.

Samsung all the way. Bought one 2 years ago no problems at all.
Apparently samsung sell other parts to other manufacturers.

samsung are top picture but naff sound quality compare to most other brands you will need to have it well over 50 volume to have anything like average quality imo

Toshiba are good, panasonic and lg good but imo sony are the dog's

The Tv to have at this moment is the Samsung Led series 7 or 8 but it's not cheap.

The sound quality is just average but the image is the best you can find.

I suppose when you buy a TV like this you also have a surround system so the speakers in the TV are never used.

If you,ve got to have it at level 50 then you need your hearing tested or soon will do. I looked and listened to a lot of sets , samsung were by far the best.

was in the electrical business for over 17 years, common knowledge that samsung had poor sound quality compared to most other manufactures, if they could sort this then there sets would be the best on the market due to excellent picture quality, they havent so imo there not!

perhaps bodg have you ever thought its your hearing that needs a check? lol ;-)

just bought an LCD myself, a Toshiba, which seems to be good so far.

In my limited experience, i will say that i got the shop to demo a load of them, and each Samsung sounded like a crappy laptop

+1 - i went for a 1080p Panasonic Plasma. Only as it had What Hi Fi Sound and Vision 5 Star rating and inclusive 5 year warranty. That was a few years ago now though so things may of moved on. They have certainly got cheaper !

Im well happy with mine anyway. When i got mine, the only one that had a better review was the Pioneer . Unfortunately it was double the price at over 4 grand

I think Sony have been the TV's to beat for the last 30 years to be honest, unless you start spending MEGA money i don't think you can beat them for Price, Quality and reliability!

I'm a Panasonic man after knowing a guy who worked in Currys repairing TV's for years Bought one and am not disappointed.

And no one really needs 1080p anyway! I love marketing bullshit

If you have a COSTCO near you it's worth the £25-30 fee. Me and a mate from work bought our 1080p lcd's from there. Came with a 5 year warranty, his samsung broke after 3 years and when they couldn't repair it COSTCO give him a full refund i bought a 38"" panasonic and it's fantastic but still hope it goes wrong within the 5 year warranty
