Guys,
I have been approached by a newbie who has bought himself an HPI touring car (belt drive). He is not too bad a driver for a starter. Now He is getting a brushless system with either a 10.5 or a 13.5 (I think maybe the 13.5 is the better option for him). Any one know what is a good starting ratio to gear it on for either of these motors? Cheers

I belive there is no general answer for your question. I've got 2 different brands 10.5 motors and are very differently geared.
I advice to get Nosram or LRP motor which has recommended gearing ratio attached.

10.5 would be too much for a newbie, 13.5 would be better, but gearing would depend on track size, battery used etc.

I am aware that different makes tend to work in different ways. But a basic ratio is all that is needed to start the ball rolling. Its a club size track and yes I agree a 10.5 will be too much, so what would you gear a 13.5 if at a club event with roughly a 20 metre straight in a touring car.

we run on a similar length straight on carpet at our local club.
gearing varies a LOT between motors, with some below 5 and others up around 6. I've run a speed passion 13.5 there on a ratio of about 5.1 It also depends greatly on the speedo that he's got, the newer 'dynamic timing' ones mean you gear a lot higher (6 or even 7) and let the speedo change things around. |

24/72 in a tc3 (final drive 2.5-1) on an ezrun 9t brushless in tc3 works well on our track albiet a bit too fast, low grip level though, that'll make s big difference too

I have jsut started on-road racing and have a TA-05 with a Novak 13.5 SS geared at 5.2. We race on outdoor tarmac down here, our track is medium/small. I have heaps of punch geared like that, but some of it is probably due to the magical Tekin RS ESC
