2wd lipo configuration?

I wondered if there was any point in making my saddle pack lipos fit my chassis length ways? I know the latest Losi 2wd does this.
Is there a benefit in doing this as apposed to the standard saddle layout where they both sit more rearward, in front of the back wheels.
What will I gain and lose in doing this?
