Default 2wd Buggy tyre and noob questions!

Hi guys,
I popped down last night to check out the club, met some nice people and I'm now looking at getting a buggy

A little about me - I used to race 1/10th electric touring cars about 8 years ago and worked in a model shop at the time but I am now severely out of the RC loop (we didn't even race brushless or lipos at the time!) and openly admit I know even less about buggys! I'm wanting to get back I to racing on maybe more of a budget than I did 8 years ago.

I may ( or maybe not lol) buy an associated B4 off eBay tomorrow and if I do I plan on coming down a week on Friday to race as I can't make this Friday.
I've checked out electronics as well. I just want to double check that any brushless is allowed in both your fri and Saturday series and also any brca lipo.

My main question though is, the control tyres for Saturdays (as I don't think you guys have one Friday night?), can I buy them on the day from you guys?

Oh also how do I protect the shock towers from potential carpet damage?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers
Shane

Dave who is at race control usually sells tyres and other assorted bits. As far as covering the shock towers you can make your own thing or use tape. Wes Jolly sells protectors as well under his own brand name Jolly Goodz, but he hasn't been racing at the club recently.

PS: I used an old wing to make a protector. See this:

Hi Shane

First things 1st, welcome back to the hobby/sport

In buggy racing any motor/Speedo combo is allowed, I would suggest something like a 7.5 or 8.5 motor (brushless) and suitable esc

Tires are available from myself at the club on Friday evenings and Saturday championship days
99% of drivers use Schumacher mini pins on the rear and low pro cut staggers on the front (both in yellow compound)

Front shock/carpet protection wings are also available from me (courtesy of Wes)

Welcome back to the sport Shane. As the guys above say the most popular tyres are the mini pins but they do wear out. Some people are also using the Schumacher Venom white compound on the rear as these last forever and running a 13.5T brushless setup. The intention is to use the latter as a separate "stock buggy" class if there is enough interest.

On the LIPO front, the only real requirement is that they are hard-cased. Lots of people run Turnigy LIPOs which aren't on the BRCA list but they should be! They offer top performance for 1/2 the price of brands like Orion, Reedy etc. Another good brand is Gens Ace which are similarly priced and also on the BRCA list.

A B4 is a great buggy to start with although mid-motored buggies such as the Cougar SV2, Team C TC02c, Durango DEX210, Hobao H2 pro etc are better suited to the high-grip carpet track.

These latter buggies work very well outdoors too

Thanks for the replies guys!

I was going rear motor purely for the outdoor side of it (and I'd found a half decent car at a half decent price that happens to be rear) and ill just have to see how it goes with regards to carpet. If it's too high grip then I'll just put on awful tyres!

If this does all go ahead then I'll probably be turning up on the night and buying tyres and carpet protector half hour before the race starts.

Also whilst I've managed to get away with potentially buying all the electronics and car in a week, I won't be able to get away with buying all the tools etc so I may be bugging one or two of you for a particular spanner if I happen to not have one lying around if that's ok. Also I won't have a table for the first few races (not that Ill really have spares or tools so guess I won't need one for much!)

lol, well said People are always happy to help and even jump in to fix a car that isn't theirs.

theChemist88, if you want awful tryes then the Venoms are where it is at. I have given them a go and I can assure you that they are truly awful but a really fun challenge.

99.9% of people will run mid motor outdoors on astro/grass. They carry more corner speed than a rear motor car, granted when its incredibly slippy a rear motor will be an advanatage and when I mean slippy, think very dusty dirt, not damp astro!

Centro's, Dex210 would be a good place to start, as they often come up for sale on ebay and here, parts are easy to get hold of and at club level, are very popular.

Electrics are a personal thing and I would strongly suggest buying new, as buying second hand, you have no idea what the previous owner had done! The speed passion stuff is good value for money with MBModels doing a good deal at the moment: http://www.rccarshop.co.uk/index.php...-5r-combo.html
Please buy BRCA approved lipo's and a charger which is distributed by a uk distributor and not some hongkong special. Also charget the lipo in a lipo sack, this is a BRCA requirement, on Saturday there were a larger number of people not charging in lipo sacks.

Ok so rear motor provides no advantage and isn't particularly great outside or in? Perhaps I shouldn't be bidding on a B4 :/

Are there any cheap chassis going at the club?

Regarding eletronics, I am planning on new (and not new from china). The main thing that I keep changing my mind about is the chassis - I know I'm perhaps diving in quite quickly but that's more due to personal circumstances being that if I don't do it now it wont happen for a while!

Be careful what you buy from Hong Kong/China, but you can get some excellent bargains - especially the SKY-RC stuff which I can strongly recommend

I wouldn't pay any attention to the BRCA list unless you were intending to attend BRCA events, and even then its quite rare to be checked.

For an SV2 you will need either saddles or shorty LIPOs. I've pm'd you a link for the Gens Ace Shorty LIPO that will work will in an SV2 and give you plenty of space. The other one is the Turnigy Shorty that loads of people at the club have started using and they give excellent performance for 1/2 the price of other LIPOs.

I've just checked the BRCA list for the first time ever and Gens Ace are actually on there!!!!!

I use the 5000mAh 40C stick packs and they are ace in 2wd buggy - with an 8.5 it goes like poop off a shovel!
