When we looked at running a vintage class about 2 years ago Pete and I just wanted to see some old cars on the track again. I wanted to see an Egress racing against itself before it broke, I wanted to see an RC10 racing against a Losi JRXPro or an original Cougar, a Tomy Intuder vs Yokomo YZ10; the list goes on and on. We just wanted to see cars on track again that we wanted to own or race as kids nothing more than that.

It was never intended to be competitive, we'd leave that for the new stuff as it was all about having a laugh and seeing who was bravest to run the oldest car they could find.

We had some fun along the way that first season, Harris showed us the reason why he used to be sponsored by Traxxas and wiped the floor with us using a TRX1; but that was ok because it wasn't competitive we just had a right laugh.

That first season managed to get MattL interested in toy car racing again and he's not looked back since. I destroyed the steering on my RC10 and a set of belts on my Lazer running a 6.5 brushless though them, all good fun though. At the end of the season Pete managed to win running his Mid even though he'd done the points so I think he cheated but that was ok, it didn't matter.

Vintage racing is all about that one night, what cars are on track and how much fun you have with the banter, not about how many points you can accumulate over a 4 month period and who gets the fastest lap of the night (We'll leave that to the micros). If it was a proper race series then we'd have to really look at the rules and make some changes put in some classes etc but its club, its fun so there is no need and quite frankly who really has the time or gives a rats ass?

I think what I'm trying to say here is that we all know that Steve with his Cat2000 is going to lap faster than Me with my RC10 (maybe even faster than me with my Tamiya ...). But If I can put my RC10/Lazer or what even I can find cheap on the bay on the track and race it again is what its all about, running a car that is older than the combined age of the juniors at club and lasting 5 minutes is quite frankly awesome!

So I propose a a rule change.

If the car is not in production any more then its free to run at vintage night. Forget all the other rules.

Come on guys lets forget this thread and just look forward to running some old skool toy cars on one of Andy's ace tracks and having a laugh with it.

That first season was funny....

...I deafened everyone else with my Thundershot...gear diffs, and a single front shock setup you know!!!
...Made myself fall about laughing by trying to drive it with brushless and lipo on the original 20 year old kit tyres
...and the car itself just slowly but surely rattled itself apart...the plastic turning to cheese with every racing minute...

Was funny! But that car didn't survive the second outing...and is now just gathering dust again...never to return!!!

Are you sure you are not confusing this with what's going to happen to Matt's Egress?

cant see what difference there is between running a variant of model. maybe it should be based on the first year that the car was released and all variants of that car should be allowed until it ceased production.

mike,
my only concern about the later cars running with the early cars like procats etc is the difference in the strenght of construction and availability of spares thats all.

Bri, I proved last year that a Procat is no match for an RC10 in terms of strength and they are of the same era!

Balders, I reckon you're onto something here, lets not call it a vintage series - I hereby rename it the

'Caldicot Nostalgic Outings of Old Cars'

Rules are that you have to be misty eyed about it running when it was new!

I miss Andy's thundershot!

Oww one more thing.

Do we have an official photographer for the evening?

It would be a shame for us all to go to this effort to bring out the old skool and not have it captured for the rest of the world to see how much fun Vintage racing at caldi is!?

As far as i know your bro and Dan O are the only ones with a F2 ish lens.. the light in the hall is so poor a smaller lens just wont pick up detail.
