Jon, i've just been looking through this thread & i'm amazed at the sheer quality & complexity of your spray work... I like to think i'm ok at spraying R/C car shells but some of the stuff you are doing is blowing my mind... I just can't figure out how some of it is done or how you come up with them!

I've seen some shells that have been painted professionally... which are good but with a critical eye there's paint bleed & non-crisp lines - there's none of that with your designs... of which you certainly have a distinctive style!

Couple of Qs - do you use spray mask or do you generally use self-adhesive masks that you pre-cut before they are stuck on the shell... if you use liquid mask you must have a very steady hand! Also I see that the paints that you sell are solvant based - does that mean I can clean my airbrush/thin paint with cellulose? I've tried using waterbased paints in the past but with little success

Hey Dan,

First off, thank you for taking the time to read through my thread and post and glad you appreciate/like them.

I try to keep them as clean as possible but it's never 100% perfect. Occassionally you get tiny bleeds etc that can't be helped or might get missed. I think most painters get bleeds here and there sometimes but the decent ones will clean them up/correct them. Like said, sometimes you might miss one..it happens.

I use my RCS liquid mask ( haha ) most of the time. Sometimes i will use vinyl (example shell I did using paint masks in the howto section on my site), sometimes tape, sometimes some vinyl cut lettering etc. Just depends on the job in hand. Mostly liquid mask though. Props to some painters who only use vinyl cut designs. Getting it to sit around all the compound curves of a shell is a whole skill in itself!

I sell createx which is waterbased but yes, the RCS paints are solvent based so 2k/cell thinners etc to clean out yer brush, yup. RCS candies and special fx are available but aren't up on the site atm. Should have them up within the week hopefully. will be available in 1 & 2oz bottles. Liquid mask will be in 8 &16oz shortly aswell.

Regards,

Jon

Thanks for your reply... i've actually just found the 'How-to' section on your site... haha

Will have to get in touch soon for some paints (want to do a homage to Masami Hirosaka on a Yokomo shell)... so glad i've found a supplier too for the chrome - I had a bottle years ago & I used it on everything, but couldn't find anymore when I ran out.

Will have to try again at using the liquid mask - I did try using it on a shell I did recently - but I think that the stuff I was using had gone off
