This moving over lark...

I do notice that in the real race, the slower cars allow the faster cars through when lapping, and gain lap times by trying to stay in their slipstream. In general, the slower cars are courteous and don't want to spoil anyone's race. However, it often happens that a faster car collides with a slower car. I do hope we are going for realism in all respects...

With the fixed gearing and motors there shouldn't be allot of difference in speed so overtakes could take a while and be very interesting . Its going to be all about the corners, so thats us stuffed .

Well my view is that if you are fast enough to be lapping people a lot then you shouldn't have much trouble getting by, so its not an issue. But if you are close in the race you are likely close on pace, so will have a good old ding dong. We have to try and make it as interesting for ourselves as possible for 24hrs.

Thats why I thought racing manoeuvres should have to be employed for any pass. But only if you want to, you could do the whole let them past and try to tag on, I guess the best way to put it is there is no rule saying you must let a lapping driver pass you. Just spices it up a bit.

On the speed issue. I can't remember the last time I overtook someone on raw power, it always been about the corners so this won't be any different really.

I wonder how the offroad crowd will fair with all this snoring car malarky? Can you nail your lines to get the lap time? Clipping stuff in TC is generally a bigger penalty, better get your precision thumbs out!

99% of my onroad racing is at Halifax outdoor track so its all about taking the perfect lines and carrying as much speed as possible but this tight and twisty TC should be interesting, Altho I have some experience with mardaves and quite a bit with micro carpet racing .

It might all go to pot on the day tho and I'll probably drive like a monkey with no fingers.

I reckon we'll all be driving like monkey's by the end, if uni taught me anything its that too much energy drink gives you the shakes, not good for car control! It's the drive home that worries me as well lol.

I dont think lapping cars should have to fight for position. Maybe consider using Fabcount for the meeting, as it will warn drivers if they are being lapped.

Its more a tortoise and hare type of race than having lap by lap battles with lots of cars. 15 cars on track is going to be busy, so if you start trying to make a car that is lapping you fight for position, its just gonna get messy.

Having used the Saturn motors are much better quality than the 15T. Limiting the gearing is a good idea, as with that they, as John said, could last a whole 24hrs.

The spec of the cars for this race is acually quite similar to the 4WD GT class of the SPC. We are using the same Porsche 911GT3 RS shells, wide offset HPI wheels with Pit Shimizu D30 skicks, HPI Flux Pro 17.5T (probably not much faster than the Saturn 20T). You dont have to use a HPI Sprint 2 chassis, any touring car will do. Anyone wanting to get some practice is more than welcome to join us. We start the series at Ardent on April 17th. (We might be able to let you use a different tyre if they have been confirmed by then)

you have to remember that this is an endurance race, so if you're going slower than someone, say on the straight, it helps everyone concerned to let people pass, as you're running low on juice, but it might still be better for you to stay out a while rather than change batteries.

Every car is likely to be in the same situation at some point of the race, and if you don't let people pass, and they take you out, accidentally or otherwise, that's precious time you'll be losing. Endurance racing is about tactics, rather than the quick sprints most of us are used to.

ps, I didn't get my team entered quick enough, so I'm looking at joining a team if there's space available.

Seems to me a lot of people are in for a bit of a surprise, just how steady and smooth you have to drive for a 24Hr race, how unexciting endurance can be compared to 5 minute sprints, it's the long game you are in for, no use blasting around and fighting for position if you are off track for ten minutes fixing your car!!
People will be courteous to other drivers, I know I will, anyone comes charging upto my bumper will be given the next corner smartish, I don't want to be in the pits repairing the damage you did to me car either! I'll pass you again when you hit the next car that doesn't give way.
It's all about smooth driving for maximum run times and reliability, idiot proof battery changes, smooth efficient car built properly and carefully, good planning and team effort.
Oh and coping with adversity when it pops up and bites you in the arse!

Dez as always speaks sense.

Although there might not be an official rule about letting people apst to lap, I think the sensible ones will be doing something like that anyways as it doesn't drain the driver anywhere near as much over longer times. The smarter teams will keep circulating at their own pace and getting longer duration out of tyres, batteries motors etc. whilst those working too hard will be in the pits replacing those same parts or even more.

Dudley Radio Car Club (Team Name TBC)

'Sneaky' Pete Partridge
James 'Your Tires Are Too Wide' Greener
Tom 'Country Boy' Dunham
Steven 'Woo It Down' Powis
Stephen 'PTO' Cockburn
Andrew 'Not Going To Make Up My Own Nickname' Fletcher

Hello to other team members - I probably speak for our team in seconding the co-operative approach. If a competitor team wants a ding-dong then we will happily comply in the spirit of competition, however they are welcome to come past also if quicker; we would however ask the same in return.

Looking forward to it already, has a date been set for the test session?

Team Doris

Jason Butterfield, Peter Winton, Gavin Clinch, Keith Robertson, Paul Ash. We have 'maybes' for the final slot.

I am guessing that John will be organising a couple of practice slots for each team in the morning and then a couple of qualifying (six-minute) heats to decide the grid. In good Le Mans tradition, he'll have one of his 'rental' cars dolled up as the course car, and we'll be rolling round to start racing at 15:00 (we're an hour behind France!).

I hope that he will use any excuse to deploy said course car for us all during the race; "Oh look, there's a corner marker 2mm out of place - lights on!!"

It's good to see that most teams will be taking a friendly attitude towards the faster and slower cars. Team Doris are all National racers with much practice in the fine arts of passing ( ) and the benefits to everyone of letting the faster cars go. To finish first, you must first finish.
