Are there any places around these parts (actually, youre not that far away) where I might be able to go take some MX piccys ? even better if youre there to dish out some advice (so I dont get run over for instance). I fancy using my camera(s) more, like im sure Stu does too - lets have a photo party! haha
More than happy to.
One fly in the ointment though. Up until three months ago, you could turn up at a track, have a word with the officials, and often as not be allowed trackside. That all changed after a spate of stupid accidents caused by a few people taking silly risks. ale:
Now, if you want to get track side, you need indemnity insurance (£1M+), personal insurance, proof of intention (What you'll be doing with the pictures), proven track record (known to local officals to be sensible around the track), and last of all, you need to be registered with the governing body and approved.

There is a bright side though

There are a number of tracks you can actually get close enough to, not to need track access, and still get good results.
Best lens has already been mentioned ( 70-200 f2.8 ) but an excellent alternative is the likes of the Sigma or Tamron 28-300 although you need better light)

Mail me if you want to have a dabble

! BLIMEY
I have a feeling a BRCA licence wont cover me.

I didn't know it would be so, erm, profesional. Were there people running around on the track or something ? What would they think of someone using the photos for their own site / pleasure ?
I guess maybe I need to look at taking photos at some track where I don't need all that stuff ? I wonder if I might get frustrated though with being stuck behind a barrier (or whatever ) or not being close enough to fill the frame.

Jimmy, i would not worry to much about not getting on the trackside of the fence, as you are a lot closer to the action with motorcross than normal circuit racing were you are next to the armco barriers.

The photos in these albums were all taken in public areas but of course it could be a little different at your local circuits, on the corners you were ok with the 70-200 but for head on shoots the 300mm was better http://www.gforceimages.net/gallery/...s.php?album=42

http://www.gforceimages.net/gallery/...ls.php?album=9

Basically get down to a meeting and see how it goes lol.

Yeehaa! lol
Seeing all that dirt flying up makes mi mouth water. I see what you mean jonathan, that does look ideal. I have a 1.4xTC for the 70-200, That should bring me a little closer I guess? I dont have anything longer than that though.

Yes the x1.4 convertor would be ideal and hopefully not slow down the AF to much. Some of the head on shots at donnington were done with the 300mm plus a x2 plus a 3 stop ND filter so there is a very shallow depth of field, handy it was a mega sunny day.

Jimmy, 70-200 is generally fine, and the 1.4x will be great.
Email me, as I'm at Charnock this weekend, which is pretty good from the spectator's patch.
However, I'm at Hawkstone in 4 weeks covering the British Championships for the ACU, and that has superb access for the spectators, you'd do well with that one, although you'd have to pay entry fee same as anyone else.
If you want to tag along to either venues, let me know. (Drive up to me and I'll take you to both, but be warned, it can be a fairly long day!)

I'm Burnley, Padiham side however.
I've got a mate called Pete Dalton who runs NW MotoX seniors class, I've been thinking about tagging along to a meeting to get some pics for a bit but not got round to it, too much else to do.

I've taken quite a few rally pics over the last few years but not much recently. There was talk earlier in the thread about bikes being more dynamic than cars, which is reasonable when referring to circuit cars. Rally cars don't make a bad subject though. I've got a mate who is building a GP4 MKII Escort at the moment, that will generate some good shots at some point.
