Maybe you and I define hardware differently. I thought a chip/processor was a piece of hardware?

Admittedly I don't know the details and maybe there are some subtle differences to the main hardware components, but I still think your statement of "mac's don't use PC hardware at all" is far fetched.

Please don't think I'm trying to knock Apple users or computers, just expressing an opinion.

the OP said macs are using the same hardware as PCs now. which they aren't. it's just made by the same company. it might use the same chips, but it's not the same hardware.

If you are at or about to start University for a computing degree then try to find out if your Uni is part of the MSDN academic alliance. If they are then you may be able to get Windows 7 (and Vista / XP) without directly paying for it.

Better still, 7 has already been released to MSDN so it is already possible to get the release version which I am currently using as I type this!

I haven't read through this thread, just your first post Cris,
If you purchased a laptop with Vista on from June 2009 onwards your entitiled to pick up Windows 7 for free

Your laptop has to have Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate though, if it only has Home Basic you don't qualify for a free 7 upgrade.

Without getting into the boring "Windoze is teh sh1t3st" debate, what are my options with Vista? Will their still be updates and support or is '7' the only way to go?
Should have bought a mac and used boot camp to have two hds and installed windows xp on one which only cost me £60 as vista is not all its worked up to be. Xp is still at amazon so may be a good alternative.

Windows are phasing out all old hardware so they can make more money from us, which is why im now going down the apple route as they dont change as much and updates are free.

old apples on current OS releases still work really good. Mine at work is a 1.8ghz with 2gb of ram and it performs flauntlessly.

I have this macbook pro running boot camp with XP on the other partition for playing Left 4 Dead when I feel the need to kill some zombies hehe

42 days uptime now hehe. Will probably only restart when I upgrade to Snow Leopard
