If I was a kid again (I bloody wish!!) I would definately train to be a Farrier.
We have 5 horses that need shoeing every 6 weeks (minimum) and even at 'mates rates' thats £350 and he will only be with us for 2-3 hours! ..... our farrier has to work 7 days a week such is the demand for good ones, he even manages a couple of evenings a week as Farrier on call at the local race track.... He used to race 1:8 onroad at a high level but reckons he cant afford to these days!!

Thing is though chris when you left northern rock, they were still doing business and your job was not threatened. Now your in the motor trade and thats slowed down, however you still go to work every day and you still get paid. Have you personally seen any effect from this credit crunch....??? I haven't. Ive got the same quality of life now as always.
In 1994 nissan stopped production for 12 weeks. At that time they made primera and micra. People were resigned to the fact that they would be made redundant. However now they're still there... The volumes then were less than a quarter of that now. They currently make 5 models and have significantly reduced orders. In the first 6 months of this financial year nissan made 650 million profit. However this was no where near the 950 million target. There was hell on as they were 300 million short. Best industry to be in is not cars. Its energy. Electricity, oil and gas. Anything that people need to survive will always be there. And if people need it then they cant afford not to have it... Look at shell and essos profits chris. They make northern rock look small time....

I don't know about the best industry to get into, but do this country a favour - don't get into the public sector. The last thing we need is another civil servant..

How about network marketing? My wife runs her own business selling Aloe Vera products and only works 10 hours a week to provide some extra cash. Our aim is to grow her business, so I can leave the motor industry and spend more time at home.
Check out her website www.auroraforyou.co.uk or contact her if your interested. |

My father worked for the same company for 40 years and told me that would not happen to me. His advice was to find what I was good at, and then find a company that could use my skills. In choosing that skill, he told me to make sure it was something I enjoyed doing.
He was right in all respects, and he told me these things 40 years ago. He's still around at 94, and his choice enabled him to enjoy a long and happy retirement. In those 40 years I've learnt the following: Choose a skill, develop it, and see how far it takes you. If it doesn't work out - you don't enjoy it or it doesn't take you far enough - try something else. Careers that have width, not height, are more satisfying and get more satisfying as you get older. Skills in the fundamentals of every Company - selling, buying, finance and product development - are the most rewarding, both personally and financially. The better an educational qualification you can get in your chosen skill, the better a job you can do. Despite the attempts of the last 20 years to turn every tertiary college into a University, the only degrees worth the name come from the 27 Universities there used to be before that mayhem started. Do whatever it takes to get into one of them, and do a degree in one of the fundamental skills. If you have a qualification, key skills in one of the fundamentals and some experience, then you can switch industries as they ebb and flow. If you choose an industry, then you ebb and flow with them. Hope that helps.
