HPI / Mirage organised a Rally series in the Winter of what must have been 1999 i think..... it was ace, we raced them at Kiddy, Hampshire, indoors at the Model Engineers show and somewhere else but i can't remember now....

I was racing for Mirage at the time and had an HPI Ford Focus to race, Craggy, William Mitchum, Jamie Booth and a few others all raced at least the first meeting at Kiddy - it was a bit of a laugh - all running 19T motors and control tyres but it didn't really get going.

I also ran the TC3 Rally car thing they did for a while - that was cool on an off road(ish) track.

Notice the tracks are quite often scale width as well, no point running a 10 turn when the track is only 1/2 meter wide at most. Also a bit difficult for them to marshal their own cars when they are on a rostrum. Doesn't mean anyone over here has to do it that way.

race 2 cars head-to-head in each lane, swap lanes on 'lap 2' so you both get to race both lanes..

Great simple solution to it, just might have to put an extra loop in one side so they don't end up at the crossover at the same time. Just like the full size supersprints, once a couple of sets of buggies have gone round you can tell which one is winning at any point so great for spectating.

One of my mates started running in that series, he started well then dropped down the order as the day went on. He found out the fastest drivers were using a new set of the control tyres for every race so he never went back and none of us joined in because what seemed like fun was suddenly expensive. Shame really.

I've run a rally converted touring car around astroturf tracks no problem, with the added advantage you can't break a shock mount if it lands upside down. Jumps definitely aren't a problem, they jump as well as a buggy, the only problem is they can't run over grass unless it's cropped really short.

Strangely enough a bunch of scale rally cars appeals to the (non off road racing) masses more than a totally unscale modern buggy.

If you want something as capable as a buggy any of the older guys remember when we raced these? For the younger members yes it's a buggy under the shell.

I'm not sure about that from memory, the cars had far toooo much grip at Kiddy so we were having to trim them down.

The best track was surprisingly Hampshire as it was a bit greasy the cars were sliding really nicely - that was a really good fun day.

I remember the Rallycross series - it just died out as i started racing but i know some of the guys that raced in our region back in the day like Pete Stevens and Mike Penfold were into it in a big way!

I still have my frewer rs200 shell ready to go!! In Saundersfoot buggy club we used to run on tarmac and gravel(very fine), that was fun!!

I think Hampshire was the first, which is why only one of us made it down there and would explain why he struggled to be competitive while using one set of tyres all day.

BTW Tamiya rally blocks work quite well at Kidderminster

My first ever car ran on tamiya rally blocks, little nitro tamiya, don't even remember the chassis name, legendary little car killed the engine twice because the air filter fell off the dodgy carb
