One could also say that going over the edge from adhesion is the same as going over the edge from ability... drivers with more ability will control their throttle input and stay within the limit. Less power means less driver skill required in my humble opinion.

The matter remains that a 17.5 with a timed speedo is a LOT faster than a 17.5 without, and the amount of tweaking required to get the most out of a timed speedo is excessive and in some cases costly. You may not notice it in small, low-grip club tracks, but on a big track the difference is significant. Watching the 17.5 heats at the Thrashnal last year showed the difference, and the cars will be faster again this season!

I was previously concerned about the affect of these turbo ESCs on the stock class. But the lap record at Bedworth (a decent size track with good grip) in the 17.5 class is held by a non-turbo ESC. Driving skill and car setup always have been, and always will be more important than straight-line speed; you spend about 2s per lap on the straight, and 14s going round the corners, so these are the bits that matter.

I think a lot of people just like to throw money at it then have a good moan when; it's the preferred option over admitting you were beaten by a better driver.

I dunno why people are bringing this up, As i remember 27t stock was very expensive to compete in, If anything you had to have the right brushes the motor tuned perfectly. And you had to have the best batteries. And spend ages sorting the gearing to suit.
It was a pointless pursuit, as saying gose there is nothing stock on a stock car.
Stock is too expensive as a formula no matter what.

This is a very good point.

When I raced stock in the Radio race car series many years ago I had 3 motors and skimmed the com after every run.

The reason I race in the 17.5 class isnt because its cheaper but as the cars are slower its more competitive.. my reactions are too slow for the 10.5 class.

we need a affordable stock class to get more drivers to the clubs, 13.5 is just to fast with these new speedo's for new drivers. I liked driving TC cars but got put off by being over taken by faster cars and when i got a new speedo ( LRP stock spec) so i could keep up a new speedo (GM 2010) came out that was faster, Then Tekin made there's faster. when does it stop.
If there was a limit so i could keep my esc, motor and lipo for a year or so and know it was my driving or set up that lost me the race not the fact that i did not have the latest parts it would put the fun back in to racing for me and im sure other drivers must feel the same.
We have been running 17.5 at South Hants for the last 2 years now and it has and still is the most popular class at the club. With the new Gen ESC's the top end isnt much different to old 13.5 speeds, but they are a lot easier to drive with much less wear on parts.

I am surprised not many other clubs have already taken 17.5 up as their stock class

The emphasis will be on the fun of racing, rather than cheque book racing.

Surely if you want more people at the track each week you need to make it affordable.

Just what i was tring to say Nige.

Well said mate!

My 13.5 car with reasonably priced Speed Passion turbo esc is FANTASTIC fun to drive. I love it!
And I'm sure it costs less to stay competitive than my old brushed setup.

If you want a beginners class, Tamiya minis are perfect. I also have one and rarely touch it, it's so reliable. Good fun close racing as well.
