its definitely a lifestyle device isn't it.

something you leave hanging around on your coffee table to show your wealth, just like you would have intellectual books on your bookshelf that you would never read.

it would make a great coaster, I wonter if the touch screen recognises a ring of heat and an alarm sounds to warn that you have just placed your hot drink on your iCoaster

I like my Ipod touch, for the fact its small and functional - use it on alarm stereo dock, in car through stereo, while on holiday if hotel got wifi for emails etc, etc, etc.

The Ipad wouldn't replace my Ipod for those uses due to its size. And it wouldn't replace my Laptop due to its lack of functions. Plus to make the Ipad work you'll be tied to Apple programs, for a fee, which I bet you'd have to connect it to a proper PC to download...

But a plus side, it'll give us people to have a sly dig at, while they think they looking good but really looking ridiculous poolside etc.

oh, and I heard - its a phone.... trigger happy tv sized!

Pointless.

Totally agree with you mate...

What is the point of it? Man bag required for one of those!

Is it just one of these items to be "seen with"??? lol!

Remember the first mobile phones?? the ones which were like a small briefcase case!? lol!

You have your iphone.. easily portable with the essentials on it.. you have your notebook for something small and compact if your on the move, then your laptop / desktop when at home or office?? Pointless!! Oh and you have your PSP to watch movies on!

I think touch screens are good as a portable sort of goods, but anything bigger then it is a bit pointless.

I guess this sort of item is meant to be replacing laptops? People use keyboards more than you think so I don't think it's a good idea, imagine trying to write out a word document using a hard touch screen, not fun!

My friend has a Archos 9 which is a similar sort of thing, it's a pretty awesome thing to play with but not something you'd want to replace a laptop, the Archos is a lot cheaper too (Not apple branded ). Nice idea I just think they're a bit unnecessary.

When you can get the Point of View Mobii netbooks for about £240 which have a HDMI out and 512mb dedicated Nvidia Ion card I think I know which I'd prefer for everyday sort of use!

If you're loaded n bored though go for it but in my opinion keep touch screen to the portable goods

I have an ipod touch, and it's simply the best thing i've ever bought. The only problem with it, is... it's too small ! Trying to look at oOple on it can hurt your eyes, as for composing messages and e-mails, it works, but a bigger screen is what's needed.

I guess a lot of people felt this way, hence the ipad. For quick surfing, e-mails etc it's going to be ace. If the price is low enough, it will sell well.

I have 'remote' set up on my ipod (it's a free app that allows you to browse and control your mac or apple tv over wireless) for wireless audio playback, and it's great. I can listen to and browse all my music wirelessly on the touch and listen to it all though the hi-fi.

It's all the little apps like this that make stuff like the touch / ipad (hopefully) such a nice user experience, one that shouldn't be knocked till you've tried it

The ipad will also be the ultimate portfolio tool for designers, imagine showing your work to a client on that and flipping between stills and video - nice.

your assuming it can run the relevant software! It should be able to do a slide show etc, but it certainly won't run any kind of CAD software.

You can already get decent spec tablet PC's with far greater power, which would run the relevant software.

All the other main PC manufacturers are coming out with similar products to the ipad. 10 inch touchscreen tablets with far more power and running windows 7, so much more freedom for software. Oh, and they will be half the price too.

You obviously haven't used an iPod touch. You can show videos and images on that so it will obviously work on the ipad. I'm not talking about running cad software, just showing presentations of images and video etc.

If keynote runs on it (which is brilliant by the way, it's everything PowerPoint should be) then that will be even better.

Only real problem I can see with the ipad is lack of dome kind of sd card slot or similar to use for additional storage. I'm sure somone will overcome this through using the dock connector though.

I believe there is a dedicated suite of iwork coming out for it but each application is available individually for $9.99 so running keynote is definately something this will be able to do.

Personally I like the idea but it's not for me yet but I can possibly see me having one in the future.

I used to have a fairly decent PC's back in the day for playing games etc on but since consoles got so good I haven't bothered with PC gaming. I now use my macbook for surfing, email and iTunes. Three things the iPad looks to be pretty good at. I can count on one hand how many times I've taken my laptop out of the house so 3g and 'needing a man bag' are not a worry.

I love the app store, I've never bought so many programs and games for a phone as I have since I got an iPhone, so with the increased screen size who knows what's possible.

In a couple of years when it's time to retire the laptop and there's been a couple of revisions I will be giving one of these some strong consideration.

Having seen both my daughters ibooks fail before my trusty old Toshiba which still trundles on regardless, I am never enamoured of Apple reliability, latest issue is all of her model have a design flaw, where the lid when closed pressures the touchpad housing and it cracks off, Apple are fixing without question out of warranty, just as well, but what a major flaw in basic design. Other daughter had at least 3 ipods under warranty as well.
And I hope this isn't indicative of the pricing

My first ipod touch died for no reason - just wouldn't turn on one morning. It was within the warranty period but they said it had been submerged haha. Yeah I regularly take a shower in the middle of the night with my ipod. Apparently the water indicator inside was activated - but I'd never got it wet - so what the hell.
Apple sucks!

Yes, this seems to be the common complaint from people who take them into shops for warranty claims. A colleague of ours took her iphone in to get a new button put on the side, and they said it had water damage, and she was like EHHH!!!????....seems a bit dodgy to me that.

However, iPad IMO is what the 'netbook' should always have been. Netbook performance is pretty shocking, normally, and the CPU's themselves are a real let down. The screens are too small, as well as the keyboards for adult sized hands, so this iPad works for me! A lack of front facing camera, is a bit of a disappointment, since it would have been ace to use iChat/Skype with it...

I await the iPad S!
