Found this on another site
Damon Hill was 0 in 1993 as Mansell retired as World Champion in 1992 so it was deceided not to allocate No. 1 – from memory I think that Prost refused to drive with a 0 so he took No. 2 although he was the acknowledged team leader

Your questions: F1 car numbers

8 August 2007 by Keith Collantine
Tom Bellingham wrote in with this question:
I was wondering why certain number were on cars back in the ’80s and ’90s. Ferrari famously had the number 27 with Giles Villeneuve, was this number carried on with Ferraris as a tribute to him?
Were teams allowed to choose numbers back then and how was it decided? Since I’ve been watching the sport the car numbers have been done on the championship orders.
It’s an interesting question – here’s the answer:
As Tom correctly points out it used to be common practice for F1 teams to stick with the same numbers. That lasted up until the start of the 1996 season which, coincidentally, is when Tom says he first started watching F1.
Since then the team for whom the drivers’ champion races gets number 1&2, and the rest of the numbers are given in order of where the teams finished in the constructors’ championship.
Some of these traditional team numbers included 3 & 4 (Tyrrell), 7 & 8 (McLaren), 11 & 12 (Lotus), 25 & 26 (Ligier) and 27 & 28 (Ferrari). The number 27 was kept by Ferrari after the late Gilles Villeneuve made it his own.
This led to some interesting situations. In 1989, Alain Prost won the world championship with McLaren but left to join Ferrari. So in 1990 Ferrari ran with numbers 1 & 2, and McLaren took over their numbers 27 & 28 – with Senna carrying Villeneuve’s old number.
The teams could pretty much pick the numbers as they chose, within reason. Early in F1 history there were some odd exceptions and the same driver or team would not necessarily have the same number from race to race – local rules often prevailed.
The highest ever seen on a car in a world championship event was 136 on Rudolf Krause’s BMW in the 1952 German Grand Prix. At that race, every car in the Grand Prix was numbered 101 or higher. This was because each car in each support race had its own unique number.
For 1996 the sport’s governing body decided it wanted a numbering system based on where the teams finished in the previous season’s championship.
And so the historic number 27 hasn’t been seen since Alesi drove with it at Adelaide in the last race of 1995. Some higher numbers have been used, as Friday test drivers in recent years have used numbers 31 and above.
But with Prodrive filling the final 12th slot on the Grand Prix grid next year, and presumably taking numbers 24 and 25, we aren’t likely to see number 27 again unless the grid expands to 13 cars.
And we won’t see it on a Ferrari unless the grid expands to 13 cars and the team finishes last in the constructors’ championship…

I think Hamilton will edge Button out, but hopefully only to 2nd, it would be great to see the Brits romp away in F-1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What engines will Mclaren have???

looks like I am a Mclaren fan again...

I really have no interest in the 'old' BGP team now, especially since I heard that Merc are bringing in their own set of engineers... they might be OK in 2010 as the current batch of BGP eng's did the car, but 2011, the car will be wank! (I hope)

As part of a deal that will see the McLaren Group buy back Mercedes's 40% shareholding by 2011, the German company will continue to supply free engines and sponsorship to the team for at least the next six years.

Interesting the free engines???? what about the $$$$capping

i doubt it. im sure they'd rather have their engine in a winning team and get some success!

we all saw how badly BMW did when they went on their own and Mercedes could be the same.

Sadly, I don't think either of the Brits will get the number one spot next year.

Alonso + Ferrari = number one spot......(I hope I'm wrong!!!!!)

Latest news I saw is that Mercedes will own 75% and Ross Brawn/Nick Fry 25% (-ish in both numbers) and Brawn/Fry will continue as Principle/CEO respectively.

Button will have 1 on his car wherever he races. If he's at McLaren, then he's 1 and Hamilton is 2, and Brawn will have 3 and 4. Not sure what they'll do with Toyota's and BMW's numbers as they finished 5th and 6th respectively.

Mercedes are supporting Rosberg, so he is expected to be at Brawn. Nick Fry says they have no need for two German drivers, suggesting Heidfeld may not be in the frame. No mention of Button at Brawn, so probably going to turn up a McLaren.

With no refuelling, and Button's renowned smooth touch on the tiller, he should race well. Needs to recover his qualifying expertise from earlier this season, as a start from mid-grid can't be recovered in the pit stops. But part of me says that Hamilton may hand him his arse on a plate...

Alonso is joining a weak Ferrari, who don't have anyone left who knows how to win. He'll be there if the car's OK, but judging from this year's offering, it might bark a lot!!

As everyone says, another good year in prospect.

McLaren are believed to be offering him a salary in the region of £7-8m - about double the offer made by Brawn/Mercedes.

I think Brawn/Mercedes would regret signing Heidfeld, it would have been good to see Kubica & Rosberg out of either of them but unfortunately he'd already signed up at Renault - I rate him far higher then Heidfeld though!

I wonder who any of the new teams will sign up? Assuming some of them will want guys with F1 Experience will any of them have room for the likes of Kovalainen etc? There must be a few drivers without drives lined up!

I rarely ever read a good word about Heidfield, but I rate him. He might not have the overall ability to become World Champion, but he is Mr Consistent. Just what you need for a number 2 driver, helps racking up the points for the Constructors Championship.

Still don't understand why Brawn didn't resign Barrichello. He might be old, but he hasn't lost any desire to win and has a wealth of experience to help develop the car. I don't think Brawn will be the shining star next year, as they were this year, without Button+Barrichello. If Button does go to McLaren, he's made the right decision. Their car was awesome towards the end of the season.
