The way things are, now, lots of people get accused but are never prosecuted, some are prosecuted and still actually innocent etc. Nobody likes kiddie fidlers or murderers, but as a member of a jury, I could find someone guilty, and sentence them to life, but I wouldn't sleep, sentencing them to death.

Now how would you feel if due to a miscarriage of justice it was your mother, father, sister, brother, son or daughter convicted, or even you wrongly sentenced to death. Would you statement above then change or heck you still feel that it's ok as we've still got lots of people in the world?

someone abuses your kid the police catch him, he really believes (as glitter does) that he has done nothing wrong, but admits abusing your kid, he gets found guilty and gets 5 years. then when he gets out he gets a new i.d., gets relocated, gets a job and gets protected for the rest of his life when it should be our kids that get protection. is that ok? i think not. let them all swing |

i do get the problem what frogger said and it is total stupidity,
but this thread started with should capital punishment be used, and what i'm saying is yes in cases of child abuse were the abuser admits what he done, or admits what he done, and doesn't exept whats wrong with what he did. someone said it was fiction so they should fictitious names, and they have served there time so they should be left alone. why should these scum bags be left to rebuild there lives, and move on. i don't imagine it's so easy for the victims. so do we just tell the victims to just pull them selves together and get on. |

I agree with you totally on that point..take maxine carr she was given a new ID its just b****x , anyone who does admit to the said crime and they are found guilty 100% then yes take away what they have took from others but the criminal justice system sucks in this country.

yes, but the system is wrong, not the justice, in that, no matter what crime, the victim ends with no rights in this. If you can prove, 100% that the person is guilty, then, maybe, but there is never 100%.
As for being a Paedophile, you can be accused, but never actually convicted for it, like that has been reported recently. You only got to be taking pics in a playground, of your child, playing, some other parent could take offence, and report you, your name is on record... where do you stop? I purposely didn't watch the show, as it would of only annoyed me, but C4 are renown for 'way out there' program topics.

Lots of brave words from the comfort of your own keyboards - well done!
Isn't the problem that we don't catch enough people who commit crime? We don't have the death penalty in this country, but we have a 90%+ clear-up rate for murder. As a percentage of population, the number of murders has risen since WWII, and then stabilised at about 700 - 800 per year. Whilst we had the death penalty, murders continued to rise between the late '20s and 1945. That rise carried on until the death penalty was abolished in 1969, rose to the current figure in the mid-seventies, and stayed there. So, the death penalty does not discourage people from committing crime. Recent research in China has clearly shown that the likelihood of being caught has a direct relation to the propensity to commit crime. Arrest more people for a given offence (increase the clear-up rate) and that crime diminishes. It is no coincidence that America has a murder rate 10x ours, with a clear-up rate around 60%. So, what gets my blood boiling is the idea that if we put up more CCTV cameras, we will solve more crimes, and other such political rubbish. I want more police solving more crime with irrefutable evidence that means people are sentenced to be separated from Society for some time. When clear-up rates for crimes reach the 90% we achieve for murder (as opposed to 18% for burglary) guess what will happen to the amount of crime. Baying for a return of the death penalty is a complete waste of time. Where they have it (USA, China, etc.) they have higher rates of crime for capital offences than we do because they have lower clear-up rates. Less crime is a result of higher clear-up rates, not harsher penalties. Mind you, I'm also glad I live in a nation of keyboard jockeys, and not one where people think it's a good idea to stand for Parliament!!

I think, that the country should look at how minor crime is dealt with, personally, and how sentencing is set.
I would happily like to see more use of Community Service, but in a high vis jacket, actually working in YOUR community, not sitting up in B+Q carpark having a burger... And if you care convicted, and sentenced to a custodial term, the sentence should be the minimum time you have to serve, so not 6 years, out in 3 for good behaviour, should be 6 years if you behave.... then the victim has a much better idea of how long the person is locked away from. Oh, if you commit a crime, which you get incarserated for, then you lose most of your human rights.

Nobby, you fail to mention that he 'got out' cos his conviction was overturned as he was wrongly convicted, and released in 1999.
Not that I care, cos I dont, but hell if I went to jail and was surrounded by some big hard muscley feckers telling me to take this pill I doubt id have the balls to say no. Yawn.
