Dan's the man yes that's it, I knew somewhere I'd seen a XX4 with the belt routed around the motor... For some reason it had stayed in my mind as being the X5.

You're right about the belt not being deformed. I just see it as less of a compromise than having 3 belts for instance. Because there is a large amount of contact it seems that the front belt can be run loose with no slip. All will become clear in the next few days when i start testing.
