I have used oven cleaner to remove the anodising, but leave it on to long and it starts to pit the aluminium, not sure what the pros use, maybe a acid bath of some sort.

Over here in the states we use the spray oven cleaner to get all of the anodizing off of the parts & to prep the parts you need to buff em' up to a nice high shine (just got to keep the parts cool during this process to prevent the buffing compound building up on the parts) The more shine you can put on the parts the better the finished anodized part will look

ive done home anodising before, its fairly easy to do but you need some good ventilation as the fumes are flammable and not nice on the lungs.

basic ingredients are caustic soda(drain cleaner) to prep the surface, distilled water to rinse the caustic away, acid(bottles of car battery acid works great diluted down with water),then some clothes dye, dylon works well.

a good 12v power source for the anodising and remember to keep the acid cool as it gets hot when anodising..the cooler you can keep it the better, for hard anodising you need the acid to be very very cold.

and remember not all alloys will anodise..the FC stuff doesnt take well as it contains copper to help it machine better.

i still have a box full of battery acid here..might have to give it a go again

I think, in todays climate, both of you should be glad of having ANY job, where there are lots of people with financial commitments losing theirs.....
