Why is the special special?
What's the difference between it and any other LWB mid?

If you mean the Custom Special, it's just a long wheelbase normal Turbo Mid. The differences between a Custom and Custom Special are the gold shocks, front UJs and turnbuckles.

The Turbo Optima Mid Special is the big one. That came with all options including and was the only kit that came with ball diffs. It also included two sets of Option House tyres on three piece yellow wheels. It was only available in limited numbers, which is why they are hard to find.

That's odd Terry...just took apart my mid SE and that had a ball diff in the front and back!

Yeah, the Mid SE also came with ball diffs. Forgotten about that, as the SE wasn't available in the UK back then so wasn't in my r/c history and I tend to forget about it.

It's ok Terry...even the best of historians have lapses

Though, it's the first Kyosho I've seen with my own eyes that has ball diffs.

It's all in bits now getting a good clean.

Ah ok. Well I'm building mine with ball diffs.
I haven't bought shell, wheels or tyres yet so shall I make it a mid special instead?

Default Ball Diffs Complete

Mmm, nothing nicer than a shiny brand new vintage diff (well apart from all modern ones, lol)

But the chassis is interesting.
Mid LWB came in Ally, FRP & Carbon. Which went with what?
Atm, I've got a carbon chassis and ball diffs which I assume doesn't really make my build an OMCS does it?

I think:

SWB

Mid (alloy) OT-91
Turbo Mid & Turbo Mid SE countersunk alloy chassis OTW-3.

LWB

Mid Special chassis (carbon) OTW-5,
Mid Custom (alloy) OT-122
Mid Custom Special (FRP) OT-128

Note: As Terry states on another forum: Mid Custom Special was FRP OT-128, also OT-122 as it was also a production change on the Mid Custom.

But happy to be corrected

Yep, it threw me when I got hold of a Mid Custom that should have had an alloy chassis but had the FRP one fitted, and the manual included a piece of paper stapled on the front of it pointing out the chassis change.

And I know It's not a OMCS, lol
Carbon chassis, ball-diffs and cheaper orange wheels made a TOMS more logical.
(I like the orange decals with these wheels)

Its a great result. So what if its not as per the guide book, its got a combination of parts and a great appearance that anyone would be happy with.

I'm almost complete on my own OMCS and that has fibre-lyte parts and a OMC body as I prefer the squarer cockpit.

The beauty of these Kyoshos is the interchangeability of parts, so you can mix and match and still have a great car.
