The mark of greatness is not what you do, but what you leave behind. In most cases it is raising the game in some area that others have had to follow. In Schumacher's case it is just a bunch of numbers and 'nowt else. Senna was the better driver, Chris Amon the better test driver, Jackie Stewart the better racing brain, Prost the better tactician and so on. They left behind standards others had to beat that are now part of the racing game. I don't think he is great, just successful, but those are just my thoughts... |

I like this thread.
However... any further racist comments (whether in jest or otherwise) will have consequences.

Getting back to the thread topic, a bit of me wonders whether his return to F1 was more for the benefit of Mercedes developing a more competetive car. At the end of the day Schumacher's past success has made him an ideal "test driver in racing conditions". Although he has had a record number of DNFs this year, the feedback he would have given to Mercedes in terms of how the car handles during a race (and not just on an open test circuit) must have been invaluable.
When Ross Brawn ran Brawn GP, it was clear that, despite having a strong car at the start of the season, the development of the car soon lagged behind that of other teams later on Just an opinion, feel free to smack me down!

if it wernt for the likes of schuey there would have been no excitement in F1 when F1 was at it's most boring, he was a risk taker which appears as being arragant, he was the master after Senna died, but i always said that if Senna hadn't died schuey wouldn't have won as many world championships. Anyway lets hope Paul Diresta gets the drive he needs a break in a good car

Schuey liked a car that steered around the front axle, and tyres that did that for him. He would run cars with less than 10mm of front suspension movement by some accounts. That made life hell for his team mates. When cars didn't behave like that his team mates usually did well - Irvine and Barrichello being two examples - until the car went back to pointy. His problem today appears to be that he can't get that out of this generation of tyres. Ferrari stuck with Bridgestone for years when others went to Michelin, and one wonders if that was partly because he understood them and they suited him. Whichever, it is the case now that he cannot get the same out of the car, and the tyres have changed a lot on the three seasons he was away. He has consistently under-performed against his team mate, who gives us a better view of the real speed of the car. It's slow, so he hasn't helped that much with development IMHO. Still not great though... ![]() ![]() |

Sad though if Hamilton does go considering the history he has with Mclaren. |

Schumacher in an interview wont confirm if he is retiring. Hamiltons says his people are in advanced negotiations with Mcclaren. With Massa seemingly on the way out one things for sure ferrari wont be having him even if they wanted him Im sure Alonso will have something in his contract to stop that idea

There was a news story yesterday that, apparantly, Button is now P15sed off with Hamilton!
The thing I worry about for Hamilton is that his recent conduct and "stroppy"/Diva-like attitude every time he appears in front of a camera has left him unattractive to a new team. I still maintain that he is one of the best drivers out there but I think some teams might view him as a liability. If Mercedes do take him on great but otherwise hmmmmm

Lewis has made the best move so far.
Mercedes is an engine manufacturer and from 2013 onwards he will have the best advantage for sure. It is shallow to think its about money - the man is made either way

Personally I think its great. Merc will ensure Hamilton has a great car, they are one of the best placed teams for the 2014 shift in regulations and Hamilton will be the key driver, ready to bring his prodigal speed to help the team. Merc will over time be racing along with Mclaren, Ferrari and Redbull. Having 4 teams that can potentially win any race will make F1 even more interesting for all fans.
Mclaren also get Perez, who is great, and they will have button to soak up some points when he gets his arse into gear.

Personally, I think Mercedes were hinging a lot on Schumacher bringing his A Game to the party, but he has really not lived up to their expectations, 7 times world champ or not, his experience couldn't make up for the deficit in race experience over the few years he was out and age.

when you've got everything money can buy, the only thing left is to compare against your peers...he was facing a pay cut at McLaren and others make more $$ than him...
