I ran mine yesterday at the Faversham club, indoors on wooden floor. I was advised to re-gear it with a 20 tooth pinion to get the right gear ratio, but apart from that (and 40 weight shock oil) it's bog stock. It went pretty well, although completely differently handling to my DF03, it was like driving a wet fish as the back end was all over the place. It seemed to prefer lots of throttle and lots of slide rather than trying to get it to steer round corners like the 03 does. I'm definitely going to get a front 1 way for it (if I can stick the RC Champ site through Google to translate it I might get one from them, or wait til Hobby Co get them in stock) as I was talking to one of my mates who used to run a XXX4 with an overdrive front 1 way and he said it was awesome round corners. I've picked up a couple more setup tips, a couple of guys have told me to lower the top arm mounts and give the back end more anti squat to stop it squirming around when I boot it. Any more setup advice for driving on polished wooden floor, bearing in mind I prefer my cars to drive where I point them rather than sliding around like a demented ice skate? My best run with the DF-03 was last week when it was sticking to the floor like glue, and it was actually going where I told it to rather than the 501 which I was struggling to keep pointing the right way at times.
By the way Elliott I'm running GP4300's in my 501, and all I had to do to get them to fit was chamfer the sides of the battery slots slightly. They fit in nicely now.

PS I'm fairly sure the spur gear is that funny Tamiya 0.5 "metric 48" pitch as mine was nice and quiet with the kit supplied pinion but when I geared it up I used a TIR 20t pinion and it sounded like an angle grinder driving around. I've found out that there's an 84 tooth spur available for the B4 which should fit straight on, but that would mean dropping the pinion gear down to about an 18t for me. Shouldn't be a problem as there's quite a lot of movement on the motor mount towards the spur but not much away from it. I wonder if Tamiya will release extra spur and pinion gears for this model. Unfortunately the 0.5 pinions they do for the DF-03 only go down to 23t which would way over-gear it for where I race...

I have found that a lot of the TIR pinions are not exactly 48dp, I have 3 or 4 that are horrid, but when I switch to the standard steel ones that I have there is no more noisy nonsense, and everything runs nice and smooth. Damn shame that as they are very bling pinions!!

I don't think the TIR pinions will work very well on the 501 anyway, as the pinion has to be right on the end of the motor shaft. I've been told CML do some long boss pinions (can't remember which make, probably RRP) so I'll get a 20 tooth one of those and see if it's any quieter. It'll certainly be useful if it works as I won't have to go changing the spur gear and re-calculating all my gear ratios! I was wondering if the spurs off my DF-03 would fit but I have a feeling they'll be far too small. I feel the need to find my spare DF-03 gears and do some sums, figure out the internal ratio of the DF-03, then work out from that and the spur/pinion sizes I was running, what the ratio on the 501 should be... I won't bother tonight though as it's nearly midnight, I've just done an 11 hour stint at work, and I've got work tomorrow morning as well.

PS Jimmy I noticed you have the same problem as I do re the slipper clutch in that the spring is bigger inside than the shaft it sits on so it sits crooked, I've just had a cunning plan for sorting that out, I'll try it tomorrow and see if it works, if it does you lot on here will be the first to know

Hi Steve,

I've found no long boss on RRP's site, I'd also be interested. I think Corally still make their long boss, though I'm not sure nor I don't know how good they are... Any idea?

The Corally's:

Thanks for the cell info Hairy,

That's proof that the DI is better than the 501X. I have the DI internal ratio calculated on a spread sheet, from the 'book' values from Tamiya, it's 2.4 something (a bit more than the B3). This computer doesn't have Excel so I couldn't tell you.

I was going to ask if the 48dp 501X spur fits the DI.

Elliott.

P.S. Don't forget SUPER Astute pinions fit the DI's gears.

if the 501X has TA05 layshaft and diff pulley, it will be an internal ratio of 2.25:1

How did you get it so accurate?

I'm glad my calculations are close, it was based on an average of a couple of the ratios and their final drives.

Elliott.
