Hi guys
Just got a KF and wondering where would be a good place to start with gear diff oil. I do have a ball diff, but dont tend to have much luck with them, and I can almost anticipate needing to refit the gear diff at some stage The manual suggests 1000 or 3000cSt is an option.I currently have 3000, 5000 and the treacle that came in the kit! I'll be racing indoors carpet in the winter and outdoors on grass/astro in the summer so not all high grip surfaces. I guess what I'm saying is, whats gonna make it as close to a ball diff as possible? Thanks |

I'm currently running the kit oil on silverstones high grip service and like it, Ive also run 15 and 20k oil, I liked the 15k over the 20k, I think the kit is 12500k
Outdoors on Stotfolds Astro I used 15k and liked it. I've not run any other outdoor clubs so can't comment sorry.

You will not get it as close to a ball diff, that's why so many use the ball diff, have a look at the team set ups for various tracks, you may also want to consider the low grip kit for the lower grip tracks.

Try removing two of the small gears

Hi,
I run 20,000 when the grip is high and drop to 10,000 when the grip level drops. When the grip goes completely (in the wet) a ball diff will always work best. Regards, James. Quote:

Thanks guys, I'll look at 10-15k and see how it goes. It seems to be suggested fairly often on Google searches too.
I dont think the low grip chassis will be an option for me as I dont think the shorty packs will last two races. I dont have charging facilities due to my transport so need to take enough pre-charged batteries to last the day. I was happy with the handling when I fitted the ball diff but my previous experiences of a ball diff wasnt great so just want the gear diff sat there ready to go, thankfully its really quick to change! |

You can also bought a premount diff from Schumacher, I found these are just setup tight enough and work well with minor tuning.

I'm just in process of building my kf an I've been advised to put 7000 in diff runnin low grip chassis.

What does removing the gears do? I saw this also on the warnermont setup.

Less shear on the oil making it react faster

How does that affect handling?
If there is half the gear surface area for the oil to act upon, is this similar to running lighter oil? |
