Default Gens Ace batteries, why the low C ratings.

Looking at buying a few gens ace batteries, and was a bit off put by the low quoted C ratings.
I know they claim that this is down to the correct measurement of the discharge (no fudging the figures!) but was wondering how far you can actually push them? i.e. What's the fastest/daftest motor and ESC you've run, and which gens ace battery/rating did you run it off?

I'm hoping for tales of insane 3.5 turn motors boosted to hell and back...........

IMO Gens Ace are simply more honest than some others.
I have some Intellect 5400 45c cells, and some orion 5600 (?) 90c cells and the difference is non existent. Are the intellect's much more capable than they say? Probably not, just more honest.
In reality we rarely use more that 30ish c anyway.

Thumbs up

I agree with the idea above, Have you guys used Maxamps? they have battery packs more than 100C, if it is ture C rate, I have to say it is dangerous.

gens ace 4800mah I easily get 2 races on a 7.5t and could probably get a third I suppose its down to loads of factors ie esc settings and driver.
They are on giantshark now just under 20 for 4800's

Well, i bought a couple of the saddles, and they seem to work ok. Haven't driven for nearly 3 months, so nothing to compare. But didn't seem to be giving anything away on the straight. Will see how they go. (Should have some nanotechs to compare them with by next week.)

C ratings are just something that LiPo manufacturers advertise with. There is no standardized way of measuring.

You can't compare them to each other. And to be honest, like Orion, there is no way you can get 90C out of your batteries - the ESCs aren't able to deliver it. Not to mention the wires in 10th scale cars, far from capable of handling 90C (which then is 90C x 5A = 450A(!)).

All just tricks to fool you, because, the better drivers use high grade LiPo's, so they must be better .

Some of the higher rated stick packs are great. Good value and plenty of power. 60C 4800 Shorty pack is great. The saddles however aren't great. Well I thought they were fine in 2wd, but 4wd really stresses them out. Mine took a right beating earlier this year, two of my three packs swelled up and were coming off after a race hot. I was running 4wd with Tekin Gen2 7.5 motor. My two 4800mAh 25C packs came of the worst, I don't use them now. The 5100 pack whist fine, is now my practice pack. I replaced them with HPI plazma pro 5600 95C packs, which have so much more punch and feel lots faster all through a race, and come off cool, not at all warm to touch, like the Gens ace did.

Big burst C rating numbers perhaps are a bit meaningless, however continuous C ratings are what matter. The Gens ace 4800mAh 25C rated saddles can deliver 120A Max continuous output.
I ran my Yokomo ESC with the MAX current logger to read after the race with the program card, and it was regularly recording max current at 150-170A after a 4wd outdoor race. Clearly this was stressing out the 25C packs, causing the heat build-up and pack swelling. I'd say of your ESC's can delivery the current, and the motors can draw it, then you need packs who's output can match.

If they did a higher C rated saddle pack, I'd certainly try them again.

+1, we run 15 min practice heats and they perform as well as my Reedy 5700 packs. No issues with them at all, highly recommended.

Yes mine did in 2wd with 10.5-7.5 motors, for 20mins. Never missed a beat.
4wd killed them. Want to see photos?
They were 8-10 months old, three packs so they weren't getting abused. Always balanced charged at 1C.

I'm just giving the OP my honest feedback. If he's running in 2wd then they will be fine. I'd think twice in a 4wd off-road application.

I also bought a pack of the Gens ace 25c saddles at the beginning of the year. They have been run in 2wd with a 8.5 motor, so not the most taxing environment.
Whilst the cells have been flawless in operation, always charged/balance well etc.. They were noticably down on power against the ageing 2 to 3 year old LRP cells they were bought to replace. I then later in the year purchased a couple of packs of Turnigy saddles (which are in a similar budget price bracket) and these are vastly superior in terms of speed/power to the Gens Ace pack.

I'm not disputing what you're saying at all, likewise with the honest opinion.
