Hi I have just brought a used 22 from Ebay (I'm a newbie).
I have brought a motor and ESC and fitted that last night. Everything works ok and I made sure the motor pinion wasn't too tight onto the spur. I am using a Viper EXC and 7.5t motor (sensored) and a 23t pinion. This will have the power turned right down until my driving improves!! However, when i turn one or both wheels by hand, or push the car along the table, its really 'notchy'. Is this normal? if not what could be the problem? The car came with a few spares including the TLR diff rebuild kit. As I don't really know the cars history, am I better off just rebuilding the diff using the kit anyway? Also - daft question time. When i spin the wheels in the air with the motor, they balloon up (like the monster truck tyres etc). Is this down to crap tyres (they are brand new and pre glued by the last owner - bowties), or will it sort itself out when actually going down the track? Many thanks - Jim.

Brushless motors will feel notchy like that when pushed.
Easiest way to tell is drop the pinion gear off it and spin the wheels by hand to make sure it's nice and free and no obvious bad noise... then hold spur gear with finger and rotate one wheel back and forth to check if diff is feeling smooth. If diff feels 'notchy' or like it's grinding in anyway then it needs a rebuild and regrease. There are some nice official TLR vids on youtube that show how to build diffs and shocks etc to good standards. As for those tyres ballooning... dirt tyres will do that easily as they are much softer than compounds we would run on astro/carpet in UK, although most tyres will balloon if revved up when not in contact with track. best not to rev it up as you can stretch/damage the inserts/tyres and if a tyre comes off it could cause an injury... very easy to get burns from them! What surface are you looking to run it on? Proline Bowties are a dirt/clay tyre and won't be much use on anything else.

Thanks for that info, will check as you described tonight and rebuild if required.
I run inside on carpet/astro at Maritime Racing. I know the minipins are the best there but the bowties and wheels are brand new and seems a shame to just leave them in the box. Maybe i can use them for practice or general testing. Thanks again. Jim.

Hi Garry, yes I have done three tuesday nights at Maritime with my B4.1 but now going to a 22.
The motor and esc was a deal from here on oople and I know its too much but I can adjust the power with the card so I hope this will help. If it doesn't then i'll have a look at changing it. I'm not racing sunday, but as I only live up the hill I may pop down for a little bit to watch, get some new minipin rear tyres from Colin Bliss, and i'll try and find you and have a chat. If not, is it ok I pick your brains on tuesday night?

Best thing to do is take your kit along to a meeting and catch up with Garry and the other local TLR drivers, pretty sure that some of the TLR/Horizon southern superstars run at Maritime so you will be in the best hands. Let those guys have a quick once over of your kit, sure they'll help you with some base set up advice on tracks you plan to run at and if you are new to racing then have a good look at what goes on and how the drivers tackle the track, you can learn a lot from spectating, picking up where cars are turning in and lines over obstacles/jumps etc. With the tyres... dirt tyres will polish up quickly if you run them on carpet so grip will be poor and with the extra ballooning you'll get poor handling/feel so wouldn't really recommend you use them for any testing in that circumstance... with minipins on carpet you get really good grip so wouldn't compare to running Bowties. You could always Acetone the tyres off to save the wheels or just leave them in pit box in case youever get the chance to use them for what they are intended. Garry is spot on with advice on slower motor, especially if you are a newbie, it'll take a fair while to get used to lapping tracks and having a car that is easy to tame will help you cut down mistakes quicker and keep breakages to a minimum whilst you are learning... you may lose a second in a straight line to an experienced driver but it'll take a lot more seconds to get put back on wheels after a crash.

Thanks everyone. I have a lot of questions!! be good to have a chat on Sunday if I can make it. I will bring the car with me, if you have a few minutes to spare to have a look over it for me, would be really appreciated. 'Gnarly Old Dog' - what colour is your car/whats your name so I can find you for a chat?
I agree with you all on the speed of the motor, but it has a programme card where it has a profile (pre-made by the factory) where it only delivers 60% power (as well as a few others). Will this not tame the motor while I improve then i can slowly up the power output?

As for minipins for maritime, I run mine on a sheet of mdf in the kitchen just to get them started. Front tyres seem to last forever.
I may also have a spare geared diff which may help you get to grips with the 22. |

Otherwise, being as you purchased a used car - I would suggest giving the car a complete disassembly and maintenance treatment (thorough going over). There's really no telling what problems have been left you from the previous owner, some gears might be chewed in the tranny or bearings need cleaning or replacement, and it might need a good going over to make sure it's up to snuff. You just don't want your first day at the track to be any more of a hassle than it's already going to be due to unfamiliarity of the track and getting used to the car (so you don't spend your time there just wrenching). As others have mentioned, tyres are really the most important part of the equation of getting around the track - you'll find those dirt tires you have are going to be basically useless. But you'll see this the first day rather quickly. Otherwise, as others have mentioned, your motor choice is really over the top (especially for a newbie), unless you happen to be running a large outdoor 1/8 scale track. And while being able to turn down the power 60% will help some, it's probably more advisable to look into obtaining something in the 10.5-to-13.5 range for anywhere you're going to run indoors (and save that 7.5 in the pitbox as a back up, or running elsewhere). |

Had a good first night with the 22 last night at Maritime, and seems a lot better than my old B4.1 RTR!!
Nice to meet you Garry last night - thanks for the tips and of course the geared diff which is a lot better (will sort you out next week). So - 22 so far has my vote! Now to get online and order a few upgrades :-)
