Gear vs Ball diff for indoors

I have both a ball and gear diff - I intend to do a bit of multi surface indoors.

I tried out a gear diff and the back end was vicious on the wooden surface. Is the ball diff going to tame this, or am I looking at the wrong adjustment.

I will start by saying that I have been out for a year, and was previously doing TC.

Opinions are very split over the gear diff, I like them but most seem not to. We're currently running them on damp astro with 3000wt oil in, they turn very well but getting on the power is not so easy as you can spin up the inside wheel sometimes. We're going to try 5000wt next to see if this improves drive out of the corners ...

With my TC i came to the belief that when people first used a gear diff they used to soft an oil.
I was wondering if there was something wrong with my car ass I came out of corners, as it was sometimes a bit vicious. I think I have 2000cst in my gear diff at the moment.
I just seem incapable of getting the ball diff to work properly - when I have it set ass per the very good Losi diff set up guide on you tube, I can't get the slipper set so that the front wheels lift
that's why I am using the gear diff, but I would love to use the ball diff (always like them)

Gear diff with xray 700 oil in it for astro
But i shouldnt be too far away oil dosent need to be to heavy as there is zero slip in a gear diff oposed to a ball diff where you tighten to get rid of slip

I'm driving a 210 on carpet with a gear diff, have tried 2000 (for several months), 3000 and am now on 5000cst. Will probably pop some 7000 in for next time i drive. Each time i stiffen the diff up, it gets better.

I just ran 2000 outside last summer (Astro track)

It's not been an issue up to now, as my driving has been so poor!

Sounds bang on

I've mainly been using the ball diff in my DEX210 for the last year but I've recently started running the geared diff, just to try out! As mrspeedy said, people do run geared diffs WAY too light, you would never be able to run a ball diff this loose!

I also race on astro and indoors on carpet, running the geared diff as light as 2000wt you lack drive out of corners and as mrspeedy said getting on the power round a corner it can easily diff out.

Good to know 5000wt has been working for you and each time it's getting better and better. One person that looked like they were running a sensible weight oil was Chris Doughty, I think he was around the 7000wt mark.

The only issue is the time it takes to change the oil. The complete job on a 410 takes about 15 minutes, if that. 210 takes 15 minutes to get the diff out!
