We have a PC at home running Vista.
When we click on "shutdown", the PC goes through all the normal routines of closing down, but then restarts itself. I have checked and double checked for a Virus - runs clean. I have downloaded all available updates that I can find, but nothing seems to cure it. Any ideas? |

are you clicking on the power button on the menu, or going to the smaller menu that pops up, as in Vista, you can set the 'power button' to do all sorts except shutdown....

Try this first, there are many reasons why it can happen though:
1) Start > Control Panel > Power Options > High Performance 2) Start > Control Panel > Device Manager > Keyboards > select your keyboard > right click + Properties > Power Management > make sure the box is unchecked for "Allow this device to wake the computer" 3) Start > Control Panel > Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices > select your mouse > right click + Properties > Power Management > make sure the box is unchecked for "Allow this device to wake the computer" 4) Close Device Manager window Now try to shutdown. |

That will probably need a bios upgrade then.

Finally found that the problem was caused by a faulty Firewire card.
Once it had been removed, we were able to power down the PC as normal. Thanks for the ideas & suggestions posted both on here and via pm. Stuart. |
