Default DEX410R or Lazer ZX-5 FS2

Hey guys, I'm not here to start any war on those two cars , but I am looking for honest opinions. I'm looking to get a new 1/10 4WD car, and I have narrowed down my search to two cars - Team Durango DEX410R and Kyosho Lazer ZX-5 FS2. What are your take on both cars? I have heard that the DEX410R is somewhat difficult to drive, though it is a more aggressive car than the ZX-5 FS2. However, the ZX-5 FS2 is better built and very forgiving.

Any comments?

Thank you!

Hi Superman,

Well i actually started with DEX410 before i went to FS2 car.
I ran DEX for about 7-8months i could not get on with the car at all.
Yes it was very quick car to drive but it was always letting me down.
I went through £60 worth if not more slippers/spurs & was always chewing rear wheels because of the pins. Dont get me wrong the car was very bonmb proof never broke it but little things let it down for the money. so decided to jump ship as it was costing me way to much money for the bloody thing. I started with FS & straight away my lap times at Worksop was consistant also the car is very very stable you could always catch the car if you felt the rear sticking out. I had the biggest smile on my face. Then thanks to Nick C, he suggested few changes the car was even faster. Next outing i had was the Oople event all weekend the car got better & better was brilliant to drive it jumped so bloody well too. Alot of the guys did comment how well it was going & again thanks for the time from Nick C again.
So i have just got myself the FS2 thats currently being built this weekend ready for the indoors series.

As for strenght i think its very hard car to break tbh. All the time i have been driving i have only ever donefront shock tower than was down to me landing on it at Worksop.

I wouldnt ever go back to the DEX410 even with the new improved car.

Even some of the guys i raced with have now left the DEX410 down the liability issues with the car. Dont get me wrong when it's running right it can reward you with great day but i just never had good time cos it cost me to much money.

But thats my little moan for the morning

If you said Tamiya vs FS2 that would be very diff question to answer

I am with Mr Carlin on this ...

I have run my FS (which was my upgraded SP which was originally a standard ZX5 in 2007!!!) since they came out more or less. In that time I have never had an concern about the durability of the car in fact 95% of the time even a breakage will actually hang together to finish the run and is always something that is easy / cheap to change out.
In addition the transmission is awesome, 1 diff rebuild since Xmas isn't bad going, still silky smooth now!

I am not going to say the car is perfect, no car is but the FS is so damn close you wouldn't believe it! I will admit that I have had the occassional "odd" hingepin failure but only ever at Coventry (on the car killing astro track) but otherwise all I replaced due to breakage this year was 2 front wishbones after one bad landing (Cov again) and one radio gear related full chat straight on moment! Tough as old boots but as agile as a antilope running for its life!

IF I was going to change to anything other than the Kyosho it would be the Tamiya but as the UK based support for Tamiya is near zero and I don't do internation ordering I see no reason to change, to be honest ... even if the Tamiya car was on every model shop shelf in the country I'd probably only be temped by it's shiney blueness

Get an FS/FS2 ... i am sure you'll love it

Thanks guys for the honest opinion. Interesting that both of you mentioned Tamiya , we'll just leave that discussion to another day!

Another thing that I read about the DEX410 is that fitting electronics can be challenging. Looking at the pictures, it doesn't appear to be the case with the ZX-5 FS2. Is that true?

If you take you time with the DEX410 when added the electrics it's fine.
I know some guys struggle with the SP race gear though.
I used LRP & fitted really well was happy & was pretty tidy.

On the other hand the FS/FS2 has plenty of space for t your electrics, the only thing i would suggest to use is low profile servo just due to the servo arm angle apart from that you be laughing.

I have been running the Ko Propo Low profile model - PDS-2413ICS always run these in my electric cars.
But the other option is the Savox ones they are cheaper money but as good as the Ko models

+1 for the low-profile servo, even allowed me to get my micro reciever between servo and centre shaft to make the instalation super tidy!

I use Futaba servos, never had a problem and just remember ... about 75% of model fliers use Futaba servos no matter what brand of radio they use ... I wonder why

Just one extra point about the FS/FS2 ... you have more driveline options than the Durango. One-way diff, normal front diff, separate or linked slipper (soon to be centre one-way option too). May or may not be important depending on how you like a car to feel.

Oh, whilst I think about it you have almost infinite antiquat / kickup / inner hingepi-to-diff height and rear toe options with the FS/FS2 ... I honestly believe it is th emost tunable of the 4wds at the moment ... and that is before you add the new shock tower /camber link brackets I am developing

How is the durability of the FS2 compared to the Tamiya TRF511?

I say the TRF511 is very durable, I t-boned one with my 1/8 buggy that got squirrely over a 6 pack. No damage to the TRF511...so I was hoping to get one but found out my order was 'canceled' by the local hobby store.

So now down to the FS2, B44 or DEX410r.

Hi,

just switched my 4wd from Cat to FS2... Main reason being curiosity after having seen how they went at the Nordic Champs. Now having run it for about 10 packs, I must say I will not trade back..

Extremely stable (indoor astro track), easy to push, VERY good at jumping and landing awkwardly (happens a lot to me ), have yet to break a thing. Running close to Nick Caro's setup. The main difference being that I run it with a front antiroll-bar. Cat had more steering especially at low speeds, but as I got used to the FS2 and pushed it harder no probs whatsoever. Love the way it can be driven overly aggressively if need be..

Still two outdoor races to go this season in Finland, we'll see how it goes.

The Durango was my option too at some point, but must say I'm happy I chose FS2. Might try out the Durango diffs at some point and the up-and-coming center-"diff"?
