yeah it can be done easily without a lathe i used a sharp stanly knife and a drill i then put a bolt though the middle of each diff half and spun the lip that needs to be removed down i done them in about 30 mins. as for better than a ball diff lack of maintance yes a good well maintained ball diff is easily as comparible stength wise the ball diff wins every time i striped my rear spec r diff on its second outing came off a big jump quite hard and stipprd it.

I ordered my set of gear diffs today.

They are not the ones mentioned in this thread, they are custom made by a Finnish company. Unlike the ones mentioned here, these should be rather bomb proof instead of plastic. The casing is aluminium and the gears are from a Xray nitro touring car, outdrives are custom machined Tamiya oneway outdrives, should hold up rather well

They should arrive this week, but I will not have the time to install them before next week... Should be quite a bit different to drive than my current setup with oneway on the front and ball diff on the rear

Cos there are no links to it yet... so the post was more a teaser than anything else If there will be info released somewhere, it deserves it's own thread I think.

The production rates are currently not high, which means that the price is quite high (costs around 50% more than it does to buy all the parts for a ball diff with ceramic balls and thrust bearing).

interesting

are they custom made for this car, or do you mean its made for the 416 but then you will need to adapt to fit it?

spec r should really make diffs for the b44, 501x etc as im sure they would sell heaps

If I have understood it correctly, the diff casing is custom made for this car, but even if it were "just" modified from another cars casing (for example nitro touring car), it wouldn't really matter as long as it works, not to me at least.

I am not talking about the spec r diff, but another one that I ordered. The one I ordered is made for this car, and uses customized Tamiya oneway outdrives, Xray NT1 gears, and if I have understood it correctly, it uses a custom diff case, but of that I'm not sure.

Edit: Confirmation, the diff case is custom made for this car, not customized from another case.

hey stu, can u just explain the lip that needs to be cut down, does cutting that lip down allow the diff bearing to be pushed over them. Also can you offer some more details of the diff being stripped, was it some internal gears that went? what motor were u running, im thinking for a stock application, it could still be a worthwhile endeavour

thanks

yeah if you cut the lip down the bearing slids on futher allowing the correct gap as for the stripping yes it was the internal gears and it was running a 13.5 spec motoron polished floor with some jumps they simply are not up for the job.
