Default Tamiya Silver Can Motors - Differences?

Hi all,

Can anyone list the differences in spec between the silver can motors please, i.e. those commonly found in Tamiya kits? I've had a look around the forums already but cannot find much info.

I've heard them reffered to as Johnson, Mabuchi and I actually have some with white endbells, black endbells, dull exteriors and shiny exteriors. Can anyone suggest the differences and which are generally considered the best please? Any specs greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

The tamiya j motor is to be stayed away from (http://goldstarstockists.net/live/ca...95e084c5d0aafb)
Not even worth 1p let alone £15!

The lastest silver can (black end bell) motors are to go for!

Hope that helps you

The main diffrences are inside the motor's ie winding and how the brushes are made.
The latter two motors are made by mabuchi which is a huge maker of motors over in japan
So its down to you now on which one to buy

Cool, thanks for that. I thought it was more complex and that there were more variations than that, but I guess not.

I use the Mabuchi RS540SH in my bangers - the ones that come in Durga kits and the like. Robust, reliable and fairly quick for a silver can motor

540J motor all the way. i agree that recently there been some poor motors (must of been a dud batch) i wont touch any other silver can motor for racing. they seem the best for smoothness and performance, with the right gearing you be beating half of the 27t stock guys

Back in the depths of my dim and distant memory, I recall a way of advancing the timing slightly on a silver can motor, by putting an allen key or something similar into the motor to jam the armature, and then gripping the pinion with a pair of pliers and twisting the shaft.

Question is - which way to you twist it?
