Well, if you have been wrongly convicted (maybe even innocent), you have gone to jail, your free and independent life is over, your head isn't exactly going to be in the right place to be making educated decisions, careless of what is said. And this comes back to the original topic, if this man had been found guilty and sentenced to death, then a possibly innocent man would of not been terminated, the state would of infact, taken a life illegally, which conjures up all sorts of horrible images.

The death penalty should never be used... apart from the potential of innocents being convicted and killed, prison is there for two reasons, punishment and rehabilitation... society has now realised that people often commit crimes because of reasons other than because they're arseholes, in prison the theory is that you can punish the prisoner for the crime(s) commited, and rehab them to prevent repeat offending.

Now obviously this doesn't always work, but in fairness you don't hear about the times when it does, only the times when it doesn't.

Also, since prisoners are convicted by the laws standing at the time, who is to say that in 10-15 years the ones who you sentenced to death might be found to have broken no laws at all... I don't mean child molesting or murder etc, but for instance say the BNP get in with a sizable majority (not likely) and made being Muslim a capital offence... at least if you imprison them it is reversible... otherwise you could end up with genocide on a scale not seen since a certain german fella killed a few million jewish people.

But, Mark, what is their crime clear-up rate? If it is in the high 90s, then the penalty is a deterrent as people know thye will be caught, and then the penalty applies. If the clear-up rate is low, then crime goes unpunished whatever the penalty. Unless you know the clear-up rate, your point is useless, as it just repeats the completely unsubstantiated notion that people are having their hands chopped off!

Crime in Dubai is rising, despite the punishments. That they don't release crime figures, and we have to rely on reports from the Foreign Office and the US Department of State, is another clue as to their clear-up rate?

Er... the last two Prime Ministers were born in Scotland - how much further North do you need to be??!!!

Harold Wilson was born in Huddersfield and represented Liverpool Huyton. He did more to liberalise censorship, immigration, divorce, homosexuality and abortion than any Prime Minister before or since! And it was under Harold that the death penalty was abolished. Not sure that profile fits yours or Nobby's posts, so why exactly is a Northerner for PM such a good idea?
