501 x just acquired : ) A few Questions

Well judging by my other 501 threads, i decided to buy one.

I'll have it hopefully wednesday as i plumped for the overpriced Uk one lol... Impatient or what he he. I then ordered loads of spares from Hong Kong lol...

The hobby company didnt even have any part numbers for any spares...hmmm customer service or what....

Anyways, A few quick questions and thats it hopefully lol.

Screw kit, I can see that champ offer a replacement, Have any of you purchased this kit or have you managed to find a more local supplier, i must admit champs site isnt really user friendly.

Brushless install, I v seen a few pics of peeps running a brushless setup, I currently run a zx5 with a Novak gtb 5.5, any tips or advice on the best method would be gratefully received.

Gearing for Brushless, I'm running new ep4200's with the Novak, any starting pinion sizes that i should start from or even any reccomendations for a reasonably large outdoor track ( Southport) and has anyone used a similar combo for indoors?

allright mate the novak around the signal input wires put blue tack they dont like moisture but on the up side they are bloody fast as for the 501x a piece of art (jimmy will like this cus i ay slaggin any one off) as for gearing i would start a round 10 turn bruhed gearing p.s you dont wanna swap for a fi=ully loaded lazer do ya i run 4.5 its scary so providing you protect it u should be ok

Hi Col,

I got some stainless steel screws from here:

For about £15 you should be able to get a near complete set + spares (and the service is very rapid). They only do down to an M3, so no diff. or shock absorber bleed screws, and you won't be able to get unusual types like a kingpin, but they only make up the minority. Plus, they seem to be hard wearing as I've not managed to strip a head on either my TRF501X or on my (sold) X10.

At the back is a list of all the kit components (and quantities) so ordering a set of screws should be a cinch.

Already have a nice zx-5 thanks lol. To be honest i had a really good last race with it as well. Just thought i'd give the trf a go. I just need some advice as mentioned and it should be a good car.

Col, try the cyclone Ti kit that Brock models do, this is the kit that I run on my 501's and so far works great, nothing stripped or damaged. Replace the stock Turnbuckles with Ti items as well, I run the associated ones, got them from modeltech. Apart from that dude enjoy and have fun squeezing the Novak in!!!

TRF Tastic, could you post a part number for that screw kit and a phone number, I really need a new screw kit for mine (stripped another one the other day!! ) and i would prefer ti rather than stainless if it's not too expensive. Are they good quality hard ti (unlike the the cheese like ti that certain other companies (cough yokomo cough ) make screws from)?

It had better be VERY good to outdo the Kyosho! The ZX was looking good on Sunday mate, this Tamiya has some big shoes to fill.

He he cheers mate, you wouldnt believe the amount of hassle im going through just to get the Tamiya lol.

At the mo, all my batts etc are using Deans connectors, I need to change all these now to corally tubes as the wires that will come from the batteries with the deans connectors would likely foul all the belts etc... so new connectors for everything lol... 5 packs, 2 speedos, 2 chargers lol. the wires can run neater with tubes and the speedo wires can go underneath the belts rather than on top...

My brushless novak gtb, all the wires will need replacing as theyre not long enough to suit the new car.... eek lol, it might just be easier to buy a new brushless speedo lol.


The gtb speedo pos needs to be thought about carefully as its very tight with a 501 lol... if im not careful as well, the setup generates rf noise which in turn may generate interfearance

Spare parts are none existent in this country so iv ordered loads of parts from Japan.... im not buying antoher 501 just to use as spares like i have with my other cars lol..

All my battery packs are side by side format, so now having to alter to saddle pack, if i keep it neat, i can still run them in the zx-5 though.

So all this work and iv not even built it yet... hmmm lol, i hope this car is going to be good.....

What brushless setup do you run? have you had any overheating probs with it as yet and what kind of starting point would you reccomend for gearing.

Hi all trf fans!

I just want to know why my trf has a top end like a pissed-up snail?

I was running a 9x1 brushed motor today and it was perky....just not toppy.

I'm running 96T/20T and stock belt tensions.

Could it be that I need to fit a B4 78T/81T spur and loosen off the belts a notch or two?

Apart from that the car was dreamy in the mid-field, loving the jumps and much better than my XX4we (even in stock with stock oil and stock springs!). Never thought I'd say that!

Yes it's a little bit of a bitch to work on. Yes everything is a squeeze. Yes parts are scarce. But what a car!! It loves the bumps, the rough and the smooth.

Help me out TRF fans.

Go for the 87T spur from the B4 and watch the car fly, it really does make all the difference.

Should I also slacken off the belt tension by one or two notches at the front and back...just to free up the drive train a little?

For the screws: I'm going to order the set of RC-Screwz for the 501X, I have a set of them for my Mugen MTX3 and a previous car, and they were absolutely fine! They cost around $18-25.
Maybe you could buy the carbide diff balls from Kanzen Racing too ($13).

I did, but I have now tightened them back up a little - they do seem to loosen slightly after a few races.
