hmmm, TC country down here, and those who run IB are fast, those who run GP prop up the leader board, I have both and only use IB, they do give a fair advantage running 19t in TC, in mod buggy I would go back to GP37's in 2wd, 4wd would be IB42's

Nick from Demon is right though, people DO get hysterical, once cell goes bang and they are ALL faulty, careless of the thousands of cells in current use. I have raced on and off since 1989 and not had a single cell explode, had quite a few vent and some leak, but that is it, nothing more.

reason for any NiMH cell doing this is that the vent has been blocked when the cells were soldered. It doesn't have to be the visible hole o

AS for why the cells went bang, I would say they were probably overcharged. - reasons for this could be as follows:

1) faulty charger
2) wrong charger settings. (e.g peak lockout time set too high / wrong delta peak,)
3) pack charged to start with / equalizer didn't work / wrong pack put on charger - if a pack is part charged to start with, the peak lockout designed to stop the pack from false peaking at the start of the charge will cause the battery to overcharge.

So, in summary, the instructions the manufacturer gives were ignored in two key areas (soldering and supervision) and this happened. And, because the materials in the cells are basically inert, there were no subsequent fires, etc

Quote #31 paragraph 2 does actually refer back to my original point raised on here regarding the question of cell longevity between IB's and GP's.

The question of safety was more of an aside to the whole debate. I have seen cells of all types go bang - and in virtually every instance it was either down to overcharging, or physical damage to the cell itself, or shorting out.
