Selling a car, got it advertised in Adtrader, so it comes out on a Wednesday morning... gets a phone call....

'Hello sir, I am phoning on behalf of a finance company, we have clients in your area looking to buy the type of car your selling, if you want us to do a full page listing so they can arrange a viewing, we would need an upfront payment of £79.99, and on sale, we would return you £70'........ I don't think he liked my answer.... cheeky b'stards....

That's known as canvassing. That's why you sometimes see 'no canvassers' written at the bottom of private car ad's.

I just prefer the polite... 'HOW MUCH.... bugger off....' and put the phone down....

Just politley tell them your very interested in their offer but can they just hold the line for a moment while you take a boiling pan off the cooker ......then do nothing just wait and see how long the will wait for you to return before they hang up and never bother you again.

It's been around for years, it's a 'legitimate' if annoying business. Never happened to me, probably because all my motor's end up in the ditch on the scrap heap..

I always put no canvasers on any car ad I put in and these tossers still phone me.

I find a simple "which part of no fucking canvasers dont you understand" seems to do the job .

I did have one company who called 4 times in the space of 24 hours even theough the first answer had been a polite but firm no.

Got their number on 1471 rang using a mates phone asking if they knew anyone selling the make and model of car I was selling as I was looking to buy, guy on the end of the phone got realy excited until I said oh nevermind I've found the car I'm looking for on ebay now bye
