Default Mid air car control???

Evenin chaps and chapesses, just been viewin some vids on Youtube of rc trucks and buggy jumps.
On some it seams that the 'flip' of the car is being controled i.e. as the car is flipping end over end in mid air it suddenly stops and levels out ready for landing...Looks to me like the centrifugal force of the wheels spinning stops the flip and controls the car!!!
http://Clickity click
The jumps i'v been lookin at were hoooge!!!
What i want to know is, is my theory correct and can this/ is this technique used on regular buggy jumps on normal tracks and if so were would you apply the power and for how long??

Cheers.....

Paul...

Yeh this is what happens, it is a combination of all things spinning. Just hold your RC car and get someone to blip the throttle, you'll feel it kick the front up. Then still holding the car, hold the throttle open then go to full brakes, it'll pitch the nose down.

So this is mid air control. But what you do on the upramp also effects what it'll do in the air. i.e. if you hit the jump at a contant speed it may (depending on jump) jump level, but hit it accelerating and it'll start its flight with nose high. Also, if you blip the throttle on the up ramp it can make the car jump higher due to it loading the shock up more than if you were at a constant speed.

Complex? it comes naturally with practice. Steering in the air with throttle open effects the pitch too, ive seen Neil Cragg have the car pitched right over on its side and recover it, land and make it look easy.... ive only ever done that by fluke.

The clowns that designed those jumps (more importantly landings) want sacking! Did any cars land on the downslope?!?
Your theory is correct, it's just a question of practice to get it right

If you get the chance watch some races with Neil running you can see what he is doing in the air, if you get close enough you can hear it as well. I think this is the main tecnique to get right to be fast. I am crap at it over a race distance I may get it right twice and land the down ramp but when you do it feels fantastic. Using the steering in the air to move the car I think only for the most gifted, the last Worksop meeting I went to Neil was using the steering over the last jump before the streight very impressive.

Think you're on about like a 'whip' when you bring the car at nearly 90degrees to the take-off ramp, i'm not saying im an expert or owt but you do it by flicking the steering just at point of take-off to bring the rear round, then bring it back by turning the other way, then gradually back again to straighten and land you need on power too, to giroscope it back enough, all timed perfectly . Backflips are easy, bigger tyres help, just keep the throttle on until you do about 280 degrees then let the power off, you can also do a backflip with 360degree horizontal rotation too by flicking the steering at the take-off point and keeping it locked over on the same lock and at full throttle, then easing back on the throttle at about 280 degrees again with a little opposite lock to land level. A good flick profile of the upramp makes things a lot easier.

PS: with a 4wd

Jumps are ace you improve more when racing on tracks with tricky jumps i think than just loads of bodding on an average track.

I dunno, it looks quite like the boxes I bash on down at the local skatepark! Quite fun.

No denying jumps are fun, but with proper downramps there would be no fear of damage. Those just ask you to smash the hell out of it

I Adam Drake do this in one of the neo videos I think, the car got the tail flicked up and sideways by a bump. You could then see him steering in mid air and the nose pulled up and the car levelled off then landed smoothly. It all happened so quickly and so low to the ground .

I can do air control to a certain extent but nowhere near those guys level, I would love to race on tracks with more jumps but unfortunately not many people around here want the same .

If you'd been looking better at last round of worksop you would have noticed that over the table top, he was actually using this to land on the downramp at an angle, so starting the right hand corner in the air already . He was making up a lot of time over everyone there. Well technically, he was making up a lot of time over everyone everywhere
