Personally I wouldn't use a chinese tyre again.
In the german "Top Gear" they tested some chinese manufacturers and they all had lots of performance issues.

All of them were bad on the brake, in the wet and the cornering speeds were significantly lower.

Right,

Thanks to everyone who has tried to help so far.

Julie phoned someone local and he has offers me Pirelli P6000's, but they are 225/50 R17's, 10mm wider. Will they fit?

They seem very cheap at £40 each, fitted, inc VAT

I thought you only needed 2 tyres? I wouldn't change size unless you do all 4 (in which case they'll be ok) but seriously i wouldn't mis-match them.

If you want P6000's they are pretty cheap in all honesty, goodyears & michelins are probably as expensive as it gets

As others have said i'd stay away from Nexens - the only "budget" tyres i've got on well with are Nankangs (but wear pretty quickly) and also Kuhmo.

G for that price I'd change all 4 !!!!

They used to stamp the size of the wheel into it somewhere (or in the book or the internet) and then you could look online to see all the tyre sizes that will actually fit that wheel size. Might be worth a look.

Ive never skimped on tyres since an incident on my way home from having some cheapo tyres fitted.

Off came some worn Michelins, on went some new "budget" tyres ( Kingpin )

A 90 degree bend taken at same speed i drove to the garage on ended up with me in the hedge !

Your standard tyre will be 215/50/17 but if you look in your handbook it also recommends 225/45/17
From a Vectra forum, so width will work, just check the height, and I ran P6000 on my Rover alloys all the time hard wearing and grip well

Shit in a word.

I can get you the Goodyear NCT5 215/50R17 93W for £61 each

A good tyre to look at is the Falken ZE912 or Kumho KU31 they will both come in at around £45-50 each.

Pirelli's are one of the worst wearing branded tyres you can buy with an average wear rate of 7000-8000 miles.

If you go to the 225 width you will find that when you get near full steering lock they will catch the inside of the wheel arch, and the rear will do the same everytime you go over a bump.

If they don't scrub the tyres aren't big enough or the car isn't low enough

Well, I only ever had the one set of P6000, they came on my 418 estate on alloys 185/55 15s 5 years ago, and I just sold it with them still on 3mm of tread, so they lasted better than most.

The plot thickens......

When we got the car a few months ago I told them all four tyres were badgered and it needed new ones, they argued a bit and said they would fit a pair. Well, I didn't take that much notice tbh, but I did this morning. They have fitted Nexens!!!!!

They are on the front, so is it worth putting anything better on the rear?

Would be best to change all 4 tyres probably, putting the same on the back the grip levels are gonna be pretty poor according to info in this thread, and putting better tyres on the back it might not wanna swerve as fast as you want it to if needed.

I wouldnt want to be swerving with any tyre on if i had a caravan on the back

I doubt you would feel a difference G, its not like you have the car on the limit in every turn
