I'm thinking about getting a new radio set.

I asked in my local shop about a 40MHz set. I was told that if I use a 40MHz (or 27Mhz) radio around lots of 2.4GHz sets (e.g. at a race meeting) I'd have problems with interference.

Is this true?

2.4 is better but running 40mhz round lots of 2.4 systems wont have any effect i wouldnt have thought, id have even thought that the more 2.4 (so less 40mhz) they are the less chance of inteference

That's what I thought.

Is there a good explanation why the shop guy might be right? (apart from 2.4 costs more!)

Have any of you had problems using 40Mhz around 2.4GHz?

Lots of people at my club run 2.4 and no-one who runs 40mhz seems to have had any problem with it, also we run in a very small hall which could have made the problem worse, but it seems fine.

I guess I can save a bit of cash and buy 40Mhz without my car screaming off in the wrong direction then(or at least screaming off in the wrong direction guided by me rather than fate)

Yep, 40 FM and you wont go far wrong, i recommend the Sanwa Gemmini 2 for a fantastic budget radio.

LHS means Local Hobby Shop - for us who cant be bothered writing that out every time.

It doesnt seem to matter how respectable the shop is, they can still tell you crap to make money.

yeah i have 2.4 ghz 3GR and 40mhz 3GR so i have 2 3gr

but i am planning to selling the 3GR 40mhz fairly cheap soon.

gotta stick with 2.4ghz now

what a complete and utter load of gob shitting bollox, sounds like your model shop has had a good deal on 2.4GHz systems.

They are two totally different technologies, one uses an analogue system of a carrier wave signal (40Mhz. 27MHz, 35MHz) the other uses a 2.4GHz carrier signal to carry a digital pulse signal with a unique ID code (hence binding a receiver to the transmitter).

40MHz is good, but I must admit, 2.4GHz is the way to go if buying into the hobby.

The UK seems to be out of 3GR 2.4MHz at the moment.
I guess a lot of people are buying in.

If I can find a decent 40MHz at 'bargain' price, I think I'll go for that. If not I'll put my name down on the waiting list for a 2.4MHz 3GR.

if yuo can use a wheel, Acoms Techisport 2.4GHz system is excelent value for money and does most things you will ever want.

I wish I did prefer a wheel - there seems to be a lot more choice.

I'm not that happy with brake control with a wheel/pistol.

Sticking with sticks - Too old to learn anything new .

same here, I tried for a year last year, and it was brake control that let me down grrrr...

No offence to DNF, but before anyone slams the model shop, let's remember that for something to be understood, someone has to be on 'transmit', and someone else has to be on 'receive'. If one or the other fails in their task, misunderstandings are easy. As Robert McClosky, a US State Department spokesman, was once alleged to have said...

There is no evidence that using 27Mhz, 40Mhz and 2.4GHz in the same race produces any interference at all. This regularly happens at 12th meetings, and they're indoors which often makes the problem worse. Buy whatever you want, and if it has crystals, make sure you have three choices for National meetings to help the race organiser. HTH

The only reason i can think of with respect to 2.4GHz cause 40MHz interference would be that if 2.4GHz has a greater power n swamps the 40MHz signal, which i think it does.

But i haven't see this happen yet & without some pretty fancy equipment i think it would be hard to show or prove it at a race meeting
