Which wheels for a b44.1? Does it matter?

Obviously the tyres make a huge difference, but I just wondered whether the rims make a difference?
Back when I was racing in the mid 80s you used the rims that came with the kit, but nowadays there seems to be a huge selection. I've recently bought a used 44.1 and an enormous bag of wheels / tyres in various states of use and wondered which rims would be best?
Car is on 12mm hex on front and standard pins on rear?
