Default NIKON D3000 help.....?

Before I start I have to confess that I am no genius with DSLR camera's.

I purchased a NIKON D3000 for my wife a few years ago as she wanted something more than a simple point and shoot type arrangement. Surprisingly she barely uses this so I wanted to ask if this camera is ok for use at the track for capturing in buggies in motion.
The camera came with a TAMRON AF 70-300 lens also.

Is there anyone out there that can guide me with this thing so I can at the very least set the camera up with the appropriate settings for snapping 1/10th off road buggies in action under natural sub light?

Any help would be very gratefully received. Thank you- Jason
