Default motor issues.

I have been having some trouble with over heating brushed motors.
I am running both a micro 1/18th buggy and a Carisma GT14, both with brushed motors and a cheap Maveric brushed esc.
So far I have broke 2 motors, the first one just stopped working and the one in the Carisma got so hot that it melted the rear motor casing.
I have checked the drivetrain on both cars and they are perfectly free running, both motors and esc's were brand new and the esc's still work even though the motors are completely wrecked.
Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong? I am not used to brushed set ups but I have been using brushless in my sct for many years with no issues. This is getting very frustrating and I would like to keep the standard brushed set up in the Carisma as we run a heat of them 'out of the box'
Any help would be great.
Ian
