motor sensor wire - is it ok to extend?

My motor sensor wire is too short.
Am I ok to cut it and solder in extensions as I've been told that I can't do that.
If not, where is the best place to get the connectors so I can make a new one?
I've got a speed passion motor and esc if that makes any difference.
