Spektrum DX3S and Tamiya TEU101BK problems

I run an M05 with a Tamiya TEU101BK esc, 7.2V Nimh and 540 Black Can Motor.

I use a Spektrum DX3S radio and SR3300T Receiver.

My problem is that when I need to reverse there is a lag of a few seconds before anything happens and then I get full speed reverse straight away, which more times than not propels me into another situation where I need reverse again.

Is there any way to over come this either in the way the radio or the ESC is set up ?
