Cougar SV diff rebuild - whats this for?

I'm about to rebuild my diff and bought a new screw set for it. I am a little perplexed as to where this part fits or what its for as it doesn't seem to be in my old diff or on the instructions. Any help greatfully appreciated. I've circled the part on the piccy.
